Abstract
This is a portrait of John Henry Davis in a black cloak with a red an black striped tie. He is sitting with his hands together holding a scroll outside. The portrait is surrounded by a decorative gold frame and no glass. There is a plaque at the bottom center of the frame that reads: “JOHN HENRY DAVIS / 1899- 1969 / PROFESSOR OF HISTORY 1926-1969 / B.A. UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY ; RHODES SCHOLAR ; / B.A. M.A. OXFORD UNIVERSITY ; PH.D., UNIVERSITY OF CHICAGO / A founder of the College’s tutorial system and the hallmark / interdisciplinary coarse “Man in the Light of History and Religion”; / Senior Marshall of the Faculty; first president of British Studies at / Oxford; holder of the J.J. McComb Chair of History; remembered by / generations of students for his brilliance of mind and wit.” The artist’s signature “TOM DONAHUE” is written in tan at the lower right corner of the portrait.
