Abstract
This course presents an historical survey of Chinese civilization from the prehistoric period to the Song reunification (960 CE), with emphasis on the imperial period beginning in 221 BCE. The approach is multifaceted, in order to reveal the richness of the Chinese cultural traditions of philosophy, religion, and the literate and visual arts together with the study of political history. Students will be expected to understand significant events and trends, as well as the roles of important individuals, in these areas.
