Abstract
Artist's statement: "This painting explores the politics of a psychological power play that occurs between two intimate figures. The notion of perspective explored in previous pieces is further emphasized in the environment of this piece as distortion of the surroundings serves to entrap the viewer. The composition of the setting was inspired loosely by the scene in Pulp Fiction when Vincent Vega dies from a gunshot wound in a bathtub. The dark humor and brevity of the scene resonated with my intentions for this painting. The flesh-like mark making of the female figure integrated with her warm color palette serve to draw the viewer in to this repulsive subject, and is intended to force an uncomfortable intimacy. An experimentation in surface was employed to develop scrubby shadows, which were intended to give a dirty feeling to the piece, but in the future more resolved shadow are required to dictate how the figures live in this distorted place. The gruesomeness of this painting is implied indirectly by the earthy colors and distortion of figures, yet content can be pushed further to fully explore this violence that is budding in my pieces."
