Abstract
This is a letter from Alexander M. Clayton, an American politician who served as a Deputy from Mississippi to the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States from February to May 1861, to Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederate States. In this letter, Clayton introduces Col. Robertson Topp as "a gentleman of fine intelligence". Clayton remarks that Topp "was an ardent Union Man until the late period, but is now thoroughly identified in feeling and action with the Confederate States".
