Abstract
This course has several aims in view. It acts, first, as a chronological survey of English poetry and prose between (roughly) 1790 and 1830. It is a survey only, with much significant and delightful literature omitted. The course will also entail consideration of the historical and cultural context of the literature we are reading, in particular British responses to the American and French Revolutions, attitudes to science and industrial development, and concepts of liberty (particularly the political and social position of women). We shall also consider the aesthetic theories of the period, which shade into theories of the imagination, and of mind.
