Abstract
This is a portrait of Burnet Corwin Tuthill in black regalia, sitting and holding a sheet of music in his right hand. There is a clarinet in the background with a dark red-orange background. The portrait is framed in a decorative gold frame with a plaque in the bottom center that reads: “BERNET CORWIN TUTHILL / 1888-1982 / Lovingly known to generations of students as “Papa Tut,” he is indeed the “father” of / music at Rhodes. A teacher, conductor, choir leader, composer, convert virtuoso and a / founder of the National Association of Schools of Music, he was the college’s first / Director of Music, serving with distinction from 1935 until his retirement in 1959. / Dedicated October 11, 2003”. The artist’s signature “TOM DONAHUE ’04” is written in the lower left corner of the portrait.
