Abstract
This course surveys Western music history and styles from 1600 to the present day. The content is suitable for those with limited or no musical background, and as an introduction for music majors and minors. During the course of the term you will:
1) Be exposed to a wide variety of musical styles from both historical and social perspectives.
2) Gain an understanding of the fundamental elements of music.
3) Develop the ability to describe and accurately place music in its historical and stylistic contexts based upon qualities perceived through active listening to the music.
