Abstract
The Shelby County Courthouse was designed by James Gamble Roger and H.D. Hale in 1906-1909. The building was renovated in 1987 by architect William H. Beaty. The neo-classical, blue Bedford limestone building is located at 140 Adams in Downtown Memphis. There is a colonnade that runs the entire length of the building. The columns are all part of the Ionic order. There is a large cornice around the building. The building also features many pilasters. There is a large tympanum on the façade of the building above the front entrance. There are many small bas relief ornamentations around the building giving the plainer parts of the building some decoration. To learn more see Memphis: An Architectural Guide by Eugene J. Johnson.
