Abstract
This is a digital photograph of Hope Hudson's painting. It was submitted as the second critiqued assignment, "Irony versus Sincerity," on March 1, 2017 in Erin Harmon's Intermediate/Advanced Painting class. All pieces are 36x48 or larger; acrylic on canvas. The artist's statement reads: "This image considers one mouse's body and spirit. Two worlds are created, which use two different paint languages: brighter, bolder, and heavier in the mouse's bodily world, darker and thinner in its spirit world. Both worlds are unified by a non-local color palette of bright red and and light blue. The use of a paint roller draws from street artists, particularly Basquiat. I am inspired by the ambiguity in this painting: is it referencing birth or death? This painting leaves me wanting to infuse a more personal narrative into my work, away from the inventive storytelling present here, and into personal symbols."
