Abstract
General Description: Kiss Gyula Kovács (1922-1984), who designed this medal, was an award-winning Hungarian sculptor and medalist (including the young sculptor's Szinyei Award, the Munkácsy Award in 1965 and 1971 and Hungarian Artist of Merit Award in 1977). The medal was made by the State Mint in 2,000 copies.  It is engraved bronze.
Obverse Description: The obverse bears a portrait of Michelangelo with the inscription "MICHELANGELO" in the surround.
Reverse Description: The reverse bears an image of an unknown woman with the inscription "K.K.GY."
Historical Context:
Artist Biography: Kiss Gyula Kovács (1922-1984), who designed this medal, was an award-winning Hungarian sculptor and medalist (including the young sculptor's Szinyei Award, the Munkácsy Award in 1965 and 1971 and Hungarian Artist of Merit Award in 1977).  He was born in Budapest in 1922 and graduated from the College of Fine Art in 1949. While in school he studied under Professors Francis Sidló and Paul Pátzay.  A number of his well-known public art works are in Budapest and he was featured in major international art exhibitions.  His works reside in several European public and private collections, including sculptures in St. Peter's Basilica and a selection of his coins at the Van Gogh Museum in the Netherlands.
