Abstract
This course is an intensive study of Jane Austen’s novels, published in the Regency era between 1811 and 1818, as well as some of her hilarious apprentice work, written in her adolescent years. In addition to immersing ourselves in Austen’s influential body of work, we will explore some of the genres she inherited, examined, parodied and revised, including the eighteenth-century epistolary novel, the Gothic novel, and the novel of manners. We will also focus on Austen’s self-revision over her career as she returns to, complicates or even corrects earlier novels in her later works.
