Abstract
This course presents a survey of the modern experiences of five different Asian nations: China, Japan, Mongolia, Korea, and Vietnam. It assumes that each of these nations is a product of its particular heritage, but recognizes that they have had in common the need to adjust to a new international order, particularly in the period following World War II. While this course cannot pretend to be comprehensive in scope, it does seek to explore important themes common to most or all of these nations, particularly the themes of nationalism, revolution, and modernization, as well as the role of the past in the evolution of these five nations.
