Abstract
The blueprints for the first dining hall at Southwestern by Henry C, Hibbs. Working with Day and Klauder Architects located in Philadelphia, Hibbs, a practitioner of the “collegiate gothic/neo- gothic” style, desiged buildings for Wellesley College, created the master plan for Vanderbilt University and designed the original seven buildings for the Memphis campus of Rhodes College, then Southwestern, the College of the Mississippi Valley. Mr. Hibbs was awarded two gold medals – the Milton S. Binswanger gold medal for excellence in ecclesiastical architecture for his design of Scarritt College and the Dr. Charles Diehl gold medal for excellence in educational institutional buildings for Southwestern campus. These awards were given at the Southern Architectural and Industrial Arts Exposition in Memphis,Tenn. in 1929 and sponsored by the Southern Chapters of the A.I.A.
