Abstract
This course introduces students to the history, theory, and practices of nonfiction film and video. Despite its reputation as artless chronicler of facts, documentary film produces pleasure as well as knowledge for the spectator. This course examines how filmmakers working in this genre negotiate between capturing reality and constructing a story through words and images. Students will learn to compose critical essays that address important issues in the field of nonfiction cinema.
