Abstract
This thesis project discusses the discrepancy between Common Core State Standards’ aim to produce “college-ready” writers and the reality of the growing trend of college students who “can’t write” according to professors and instructors. Using previously published literature on the same and similar topics and the theoretical frameworks of Freire (2000), Ladson-Billings (1994), and Christensen (2017), this project presents examples of potential ways to adopt and revise the existing ELA curriculum in Shelby County Schools to better support growth in student writing.
