Abstract
Katagami stencil made from multiple layers of thin, durable mulberry bark paper (washi) laminated together with fermented persimmon tannin (kakishibu). This treatment makes the paper waterproof, flexible, and strong enough to withstand repeated dyeing, as these stencils were used to print patterns on silk and cotton fabric in Japan during the Meiji Period (1850–1912). Large bamboo leaves with U-shaped cuts connected to vertical and large sticks with a pattern of small diamonds repeated. In the foreground there are smaller lines to outline the same shaped bamboo sticks, without leaves or pattern. In addition, there are small thin lined hatching in all negative space between the bamboo.
