Abstract
Across the nation, urban and rural schools utilize expedited teacher programs, also commonly known as alternative certification programs, in order to staff classrooms left empty because of the teacher shortage crisis plaguing schools. Different from traditional teaching programs, expedited teacher programs recruit young, idealistic individuals, typically with backgrounds not in education, to teach in low-income schools for a short-term commitment through recruitment materials and application websites. The two most common expedited teacher programs in Memphis, that are analyzed for their recruitment efforts in this thesis, are Teach for America (TFA) and Memphis Teacher Residency (MTR). My findings reveal that expedited teaching program’s recruitment efforts predominately focus on the strong alumni network the individual receives due to the program and how the individual can advance their career because of the program, instead of solely recruiting teachers to remain in the classroom and commit to students long-term. The implications of recruiting short-term leaves an endless cycle of teachers exiting the K-12 school system and negatively affecting student academic and social outcomes.
