Abstract: | This course will introduce students to some of the main themes of modern South Asian history. The emphasis will be on political developments, but some attention will be devoted to religious, social, economic and cultural matters. Major topics that will be covered include: decline of the Mughal empire and rise of regional powers; European imperialism and emergence of British rule; expansion and consolidation of British rule; 1857 mutiny-rebellion; origins and evolution of Indian nationalism; Hindu and Muslim revivals; Gandhi’s rise to power; Muslim separatism; World War Two and Partition; and post-colonial India and Pakistan. |
