|Abstract:||General Description:This is the only medal in the collection that does not depict Michelangelo. Instead, it features a profile portrait of Ubaldino Peruzzi (1822-1891), a respected politician who was mayor of Florence from 1870-78. His term coincided with the Michelangelo celebrations of 1875 and he was instrumental in their success, serving as president of the organizing committee. A statue in his honor is in the Piazza dell'Indipendenza in Florence. This medal is bronze. Another example exists in the Middeldorf Collection at the Indiana University Art Museum.|
Obverse Description: The obverse features a right side portait of an unknown figure. With an inscription "PROF. GR: TASSARA MOD. GIOV.VAGNETTI INC. IN FIRENZE" on the bottom.
Reverse Description: The reverse features the inscription "FIRENZE / NEL IV CENTENARIO DI MICHELANGELO / PER UBALDINO PERUZZI / SEPPE MOSTRARSE DEGNA / DEL DIVINO ARTISTA/ MDCCCLXXV" (Florence / In the Fourth Century of Michelangelo / For Ubaldino Peruzzi / Show Worthy / Of the Divine Artist / 1875).
Artist Biography:Tassara (1841-1916) led a volatile life, including early service as a soldier under Garibaldi helping in the unification of Italy. A professional sculptor, he remained politically active throughout his life, which brought both success and difficulties. Vagnetti (born in 1840) was a sculptor and medalist, responsible for another medal commemorating Michelangelo during the festivities of 1875. See separate entry for 1875.
