The Grim Sixties President Eisenhower's second term in office expires in a little over two months and then one of the candidates will succeed him and largely determine the destiny of this great nation and to a lesser extent that of the free world. President Eisenhower has publicly stated that he felt that Vice President Nixon was the best qualified candidate to take over the tremendous responsibilities of the presidency. We agree with him. Then, too, if Mr. Nixon is elected he will be able to have the able counsel and advice of President Eisenhower with whom he has worked very closely during the past almost eight years. The arrival of the momentous sixties imposes an obligation on every American to do his part in what is the tightest race for survival our country has ever faced. We are squarely up against a serious challenge—a challenge in military strength, and a challenge in fundamental economics. Every thinking American should be willing to make a sacrifice in honor of our great cause. The crying need of today among all of us is for unity. We cannot stand divided, and the communists seek to divide us. They would turn minority against majority, South against North, bloc against bloc and class against class. Each of us must be willing to place national unity and strength ahead of selfish aims and personal desires. Each of us must try to do his share in the contest between communism and democracy. Therefore, let us all respect every American. Let us all pull together for America, and fight out our battles within the greater framework of love of country, devotion to freedom and duty. The sixties of one hundred years ago were critical times for the American people. The nation weathered those storms and under God, she will weather others. We keep the faith. Take To The Woods Autumn is in the air. The Woods are full of color and the insects and the humid weather of spring and summer are on the wane. This is the time of year to put on old clothes and go hiking or camping through these fall-colored outdoors. Walking is good exercise and, surprisingly enough, one of the exercises many of us don't take enough of The outdoors can be more than exercise. The beauty of nature can be inspiring. It can bring rest and peace to the troubled mind and it can restore your batteries so to speak, and bring you a greater appreciation of the things we take for granted day offer day. Whether it be hunting, fishing, camping or hiking, get out and enjoy the crisp, dry autumn weather in the coming weeks. For after fall comes winter and then there will be a long wait —for most of us—until ideal outdoor weather is with us again. 43 Elevated Phonse Jones. Missouri: Samuel T. Daniels, Maryland: Frank J. "We have in this area a plan of gradual desegregation which, according to testimony, has worked well for the city of Nashville," Miller stated. "According to city school Superintendent William H. Oliver, it is a wise plan and a feasible plan. It is estimated that 350 Negro children will be eligible to attend the first four grades beginning on January 20. The county had already proposed a grade a year plan but officials had asked a delay until next September. Official said a change in mid-year would disrupt the school system. NAACP Files ciation also urged the VA to launch an investigation of possible discriminatory practices in the Agency's other regional offices, citing the VA's avowed non-discrimination SPAULDING SUPPORTS NIXON-LODGE TICKET DURHAM, N. C. — Asa T. Spaulding, Negro business leader of Durham, although a registered Democrat for more than twentyfive years, is backing the Nixon-Lodge Presidential Ticket. When asked why, his reply was: "because it is the best balanced and qualified ticket to handle the most important issues and problems facing our Nation today." Spaulding continued: "To me there are some things which are more important than blind partisan politics, and one of these is the best guarantee possible of the future peace and security of our Country through the period of 'cold war' tensions ahead. Admittedly, our future will be beset with many 'tensions' and our peace will be uneasy, but even so, peace with tension is preferable to a 'hot war'. "I believe the-Nixon-Lodge Ticket offers the best prepared leadership, by experience and in mature judgement, for the Executive branch of our government to cope with our most difficult and important problems ahead. "With our world so small now, and the needs of so many nations so great and their interests so divergent, with nationalistic objectives so prevalent and strongly motivated complete agreement among all nations on our foreign policy is too much to hope for. The most that can be expected is minimum violent disagreement and dissatisfaction. To have this we need maximum experience maturity, and sound judgement in the executive branch of our government. "Based on three years of periodic briefings bp our State Department on world affairs and conditions, and our position in relation there to, and mindful of recent happenings at the UN, I do not believe there is any issue facing our Country today which transcends in importance our foreign relations. "With Civil Rights having such a significant bearing on our foreign relations, it is very disturbing to have Senator Eastland of Mississippi boasting of the fact that: 'as a result of his strong leadership of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he was able to stall or kill 23 civil rights bills in 1957 and 49 in 1960.' And in paying his tribute to Senator Lyndon B. Johnson, Mr. Eastland said: he took everything relating to integration out of those civil rights bills (that did pass)..... He has always opposed Congress implementing the segregation decisions of the Supreme Court.' "Senator George Smathers, Democrat of Florida, is quoted by the Associated Press as saying in North Carolina on October 10, that Senaton Kennedy 'would be a friend of the South' and that he 'stood with the South' in the vote against the Civil Rights Bill in 1957 when Vice President Nixon called it 'the blackest day in the history of the Senate'. "I do not mean to minimize the importance of other domestic issues and group interests. If we can keep our nation secure and at peace, however, time will be on our side and we can continue to fight for and to work on solutions to our different problems; but if peace falls us little else will matter much. "A backward glance over the progress made toward the solution of our various domestic problems during the past ten years, assures us of greatly accelerated progress during the next decade if we can avoid a world holocaust. I believe the Nixon-Lodge ticket is capable of preventing such a catastrophe." Enter Carnation's Spectacular Sweepst akes! WIN! CARS! Win! Kennedy and campaign manager for the presidential hopeful. In a further statement, King said, "When reactionary forces sought to crush our movement for desegregation by methods so unjust and unwise that millions were inflamed with indignation, Senator Kennedy exhibited moral courage of a high order." Dr. King was released from prison last Thursday under a $2,000 bond pending the appeal of the original traffic sentence to the Georgia Court of Appeals. It was after that release that King was first asked of his personal preference for president of the United States. He declined to answer at that time and indicated that he would make a final statement on the matter shortly before the November Selection day. The press conference called Tuesday afternoon was apparently the setting for that statement, and Dr. King indicated that the views he expressed then were final. His opening statement said, "I have been asked from many quarters whether it is my intention to endorse one of the Presidential candidates." "The organization of which I am president, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, from its inception and in its constitution has been non-partisan. Accordingly, as its titular head, I am unable to endorse a political party or its candidate. "Moreover, the role that is mine in the emerging social order of the South and America demands that I remain non-partisan. Thus, devoid of partisan political attachments, I am free to be critical of both parties when necessary," King said. On other fronts, a nationally televised debate scheduled between Dr. King and the chairman of the Georgia Democratic Executive Committee has been cancelled by the refusal of the latter man to appear with Dr. King James H. Gray Georgia's Democratic head and publisher of an Albany, Ga. newspaper, sent a telegram to NBC producer, Robert Allison, in which he said King "violated his parole and probation of the Georgia courts." Gray said King "apparently contends that the state laws are not valid as they applied to him." The debate, "Are Sit-Ins Justifiable?" was scheduled on NBC-TV on Nov. 26. The status of the debate since Gray's refusal is not known, but King said at his Tuesday press conference that he understood that another person had been engaged for the debate. The Democratic official said, "I cannot in conscience engage in exchange of views with a man who so obviously has such studied contempt for the body of laws which is both an Anglo-Saxon as well as American heritage." King said at his press conference Tuesday that "The Heart of the Anglo-Saxon tradition that Mr. Gray talks about is the free exchange of ideas. I feel that standing up non-violently against an unjust law in order to be obedient to a higher moral law is rendering a great service to democracy." Going farther, King said he considered his movement to be not "civil disobedience," but "moral obedience." He said he subscribed to a view held by St. Augustine who said, "An unjust law is not a law at all." King said he had a moral obligation to oppose an just law. Meanwhile, a release was handed out during the progress of the press conference Tuesday announctag that an Atlanta newsman had offered to debate Dr. King on the "sit-in" issue. A telegram sent to producer, Robert Allison and signed by Ed Blair, news director of Atlanta's WAGA-TV said: "Understand Southern political leaders, including some in Georgia, unwilling to defend principles in which they believe and have declined to engage Martin Luther King in debate on sit-ins. Rather than see the issue conceded by default, I would be willing to accept invitation to debate King on subject."
