SUBSCRIPTION RATES Year $5.00—6 Months $3.00—3 Months $1.50 (In Advance) Randolph Position is Sound A. Phillip Randolph, International President of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, told an Atlanta audience Sunday afternoon that despite threats of Communist infiltration, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is the greatest organization the American Negro ever had. We agree with him fully and would like to take the analysis a step further. Not only is the NAACP our strongest and most courageous agency in the flight for democracy and civil rights, it has been the rallying force around which most of the other advances we made have been cemented. Without the work of the NAACP across the past 40 year, it is difficult to imagine what might be the place and plight of Negroes in America today. Yes, we are threatened with Communist infiltration. That is true and has been true for many years, at least two decades, to our own experience and knowledge. Nevertheless, Negroes have gone steadily on their way. except one here and there, without paying any attention to the siren song of the Communist. It is a remarkable tribute to the leadership of the NAACP that Communists have been forced to retreat whenever they attempted to infiltrate into the NAACP. It is likewise a tribute to the Negro people themselves. Whatever is wrong with American democracy, and we hold there is much that is, Negroes can work it out without the help of the Communists. And we have no fears that Communists can change that That's The Only Way Out We like the courage and forthrightness with which the editor of the Emory University Wheel, student publication, approaches the question of admission of Negroes into that and other institutions of the South, for graduate instruction The "separate and equal," concept, he said, is a, "gigantic falsehood." To equalize educational facilities between white and Negro students, he reports, will require an expenditure of $31,000,000 for each state in the South. And accordingly, he suggests that "schools like Emory should offer graduate and professional work to Negroes on the selective basis. We think that is a sound position and the only one that can stand the light of logic before the courts of the nation. The Human Marion Sweatt case rests squarely on that position. In laying the groundwork for that suit, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People drew upon the wisdom and experiences of distinguished law school and graduate school deans to ascertain if, in their opinion, there could be any basic foundation to the doctrine of "separate but equal." In every essential respect the testimony supported the theory that there can be no such thing The University of Texas has admitted a Negro for graduate instructions with provisions for him to study across the street at the YMCA. But no court in the land, we don't believe, would accept such an arrangement as equal The plain truth is, the South is too poor to maintain separate school systems Hats Off To A Layman Our editorial hat is off to that layman down in Atlanta, Georgia, who is offering a copy of St. John's Gospel to any Georgia boy or girl under fifteen. He writes in the Atlanta Constitution: "More than 50 requests came last week. several of them from colored children. If any colored boy or girl should write, do not mention the fact that you are colored. That makes no difference to me." Christ must like that Now, if in addition to this bodyblow at racial discrimination, we can add a more widespread practice of what Jesus had to say in John, we'll be getting somewhere. Consolidated Distributors—Exclusive Distributors—Memphis—65% Grain Neutral Spirits Let's Have Sanity On The Campus President Charles Wesley of Wilberforce State College accepted the recommendation of a faculty committee and suspended the undergraduate chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternities from the campus following the unmerciful beating of probates during what these students describe as "Hell Week." That's good sense, Mr. President. College students ought to have more sense than that. And if they don't have sense and moderation now, when and where should we expect them to have it? No wonder so many well-meaning and honest Americans criticise fraternities and sororities! The dining room was beautifully decorated with Valentine shaped hearts hung over head and draped with long ropes of red and White crepe paper. From these ropes were suspended various quotations from the Holy Bible. Particularly impressive was the parade of white coated waiters from the Young People's Department bearing plates of golden fried chicken, pattie shells filled with peas and creamed mushrooms, a colorful pear salad and all of the other trimmings that go to make a delicious meal. The nuts and candies only added to the wonderful meal which was prepared by Mrs. Eulilla Holmes. The party story would be incomplete without the names of the loyal hard workers who contributed so much toward making the affair successful. They were Mesdames T. Franklin, D. Williamson, E. Harris, W. C. Woods and Hunt who made these delicious rolls. In the absence of the pastor. Rev. P. E. Brooks, Mrs. Brooks gave an inspirational talk commending the members for their fine work, attendance and good spirit established. This will serve as ground work for the future progress of the organization. Miss Viola Flowers gave the response on behalf of the guests who found it hard to decide which part of the program they enjoyed most. Several of the eldest members of the church were honorary guests, including Mrs. Irene Taylor of the Church of God in Christ. President Marable was very lovely in black with a pink neckline and a beautiful corsage. She was full of smiles as everyone expressed their enjoyment of the evening. A vote of thanks is due the Boyd Brothers who were ready at every call and played an excellent part in making the banquet an evening that we shall always remember. Bruce Boyd related some of the history of the annual affair and thanked the members for their cooperation in putting this affair over. Climaxing the evening and the center of attraction was a table filled with gifts which Mrs. Rubie Boyd had wrapped and made more beautiful. These presents were exchanged by members through the drawing of names. Mrs. Virrether Nabors also played an important part by covering the affair for the newspaper account. In all, it was an unanimous decision that the Twelfth Annual Banquet will go down in the history of Mount Olive.
