I know the answer. And so do you. And that answer is very closely related to the reason why so many black families today are arming themselves with guns. In most cases they're not protecting themselves against the white man. They're seeking protection from some of our very own black brothers. Think about for a moment. Black communities arming themselves to protect black women from being robbed, raped, and mugged by black men. I'm not implying that the situation would be any more acceptable if blacks vented these horrible frustrations on whites. What I'm getting at is the reasons for these conditions in the first place. It's my opinion that the double standard of justice is one of those reasons. Black people have discovered that robbing, mugging... yes, even killing a black person is not the offense it is when that same crime is committed against a white. It's a dual standard of justice, a mockery of law and order. But it exists. It's real. Disgustingly real. It is clear that the streets in the black community will not be safe until a crime against a black citizen is considered just as deplorable as that same crime committed against a white citizen. To make it so must be our aim and our responsibility if our women and children are ever to walk our streets in safety again. Joe Black vice President The Greyhound Corporation Daryl Johnson Enjoying Great Season With Patriots Most of them read, "Don't Open Until Christmas." This one had the legend, "Don't Open Until December," and when Boston cornerback Daryl Johnson entrusted it to the club's publicity man he added, "It's a good prediction... You'll be surprised." Beyond that Johnson has refused to budge. In hiss third year with the Patriots, Johnson is enjoying an incredible season. The club is 1-4 receptions. The day a fellow takes a job as a cornerback he can expect to be beaten. The story among defensive backs is "Why not? They make more money than we do." "They" meaning the high-priced wide receivers. "They" haven't been doing too well against D.J. this year. The match-ups on Johnson this year and their receptions have been: Paul Warfield, Miami (1); George Sauer, New York Jets (l); Eddie Hinton, Baltimore (1); Otis Taylor, Kansas City (1); and Clif McNeil, New York Giants (0). McNeil caught a TD pass last week in the Giants victory over Boston but it was while Johnson was on the sideline recovering from a temporary injury. Johnson has injured a lot of feelings among some highpriced talent to date with his ability to smother their finest efforts. This he traces to a new attitude – increased confidence and a willingness to gamble. He plays closer to his rivals now and directly in front. As a final gesture of commitment to this new policy, he threw away his little black book, a compendium of weaknesses, apparent and otherwise, among the men he faced in his first two seasons. Johnson was a tremendous draft by the Patriots, a pickup in the eighth round after the 1967 season out of Morgan State. He had an unusual background. He had never played on a losing team, high school (Maggie Walker, Richmond, Va.), or at Morgan State where a 26-game winning streak was compiled during his time. He had started as a defensive back as a college sophomore, moved to quarterback, and wound up helping coach the defense in his senior year. For relaxation he used to watch the Baltimore Colts on Sundays. When he got to Boston he showed enough to cause John Charles to be moved from cornerback to safety. He made one interception his first year, two the next, and has had only one this year. Try bouncing his figures off some of the AFC's more frustrated receiving talent for bafflement. Boston Celtics Win Over Hawks 113-109 Rookie center Dave Cowens controlled the backboards and scored nine points in the last 10 minutes leading the Boston Celtics to a 113-109 victory over the Atlanta Hawks in a National Basketball Association game Saturday night. Cowens, who finished with 23 points and 17 rebounds, dominated the game for the Celtics after Boston had fallen behind by six points early in the final quarter. Atlanta led 89-83 with just under 11 minutes to play. But Boston outscored the Hawks 17 -5 over the next five minutes to nail down the victory. Cowens easily won the battle of two of the league's outstanding rookies. The velebrate Pete Maravich made his first start of the season for Atlanta and got 10 points in the first quarter. He tailed off, how ever, in the final three periods and finished with 19 points for the night. Atlanta's Lou Hudson led all scorers with 34 points, hitting 16 of 27 field goals. JO Jo White led the Celtics with 29. Kim Braswell Scores Victory For Ga. 19-3 Kim Braswell's four field goals and a 65-yard scoring pass from Mike Cavan to Charles Whittmore carried Georgia to a 193 Southeastern Conference victory over Kentucky Saturday. Braswell's field goals, from 19, 30, 35, and 43 yards, tied the SEC single-game record set by Auburn's John Riley in 1968 against Kentucky. Whittmore set a Georgia single-game record with 10 pass interceptions for 187 yds Cavan showed the form he dis he connected on 15 of 27 passes for 202 yards. After a scoreless first quarter, Braswell put Georgia on the boards in the second period with his first field goal. Minutes later Cavan connected with Whittmore on their bomb and Georgia took a 10-0 lead at halftime. Kentucky's only score came in the third quarter on a 37yard field goal by Bobby Jones but Braswell came back with a 35-yarder and added two more in the last quarter. OILERS LOSE BOYETTE Middle linebacker Garland Boyette of the Houston Oilers has an injury to the arch of his foot and may not be able to play against the St. Louis Cardinals Sunday, Coach Wally Lemm said Tuesday. Boyette, a 6-1, 245-pound seven-year veteran from Grambling, was all right when the team returned from San Diego Sunday, but now is on crutches. Lemm said Boyette did not know how he suffered the injury. If Boyette cannot play, either second-year man Lloyd Wainscott or veteran Olen Underwood, who lost his starting job at outside linebacker this year, will start. Lemm also announced the acquisition of running back Tom Smiley, a former Lamar Tech fullback, from the Denver Broncos. Smiley, who was just released from military service, was acquired for a draft choice. Muhammad Ali In Triumphant Return Against Jerry Quarry Casstus Clay, boxing as Muhammad Ali, made his triumphant return to the ring after three and a half years absence by scoring a technical knockout Monday night over tough Jerry Quarry in the third around at Municipal Auditorium Clay showing his old speed of hand and foot, stabbed open a deep cut over Quarry's left eye during the third round and the California Irishman was forced by his handlers to quit at the end of that session. During the nine minutes of boxing that the fight last, Clay appeared trim and fit much the same as he had back in March 1967, when he last appeared in a boxing ring defending his heavyweight championship with a knockout over Zora Folley. Following instructions shouted at him by handler Bundini Brown, Clay stabbed and stabbed and stabbed at Quarry's eye at long range and completely dominated the punching. For two rounds, those ripping lefts stung and redeened Quarry's face and Clay, Scaling 213 ½ pounts to Quarry's 197 ½ easily won those two rounds as Quarry landed only a half dozen effective punches. Midway in the third round, Quarry, desperately trying to get inside Clay's five - inch longer reach, pummelled the former champion to the ropes with two thumping lefts, but just when it seemed Quarry might have his best moment of the fight, Clay ripped another of those trip-hammer lefts and that one did the damage by opening the cut over Quarry's eye. The Irishman fought desperately for the closing minute of the fight and managed to avoid further damage. But Manager Teddy Bentham stepped in front of Quarry when he returned to his corner, took one look at the cut and signalled that he was stopping the fight. Close Security percautions were taken in the hours pre ceding Clay-Quarry heavy weight fight as officials obviously feared potential trouble. With Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox making inflamatory statements about the fight and urging a boycott, officials were cautious in monitoring the comings and goings of persons working in and around the Municipal Auditorium the site of the fight. Technicians toiled to get ready for the fight, plain clothes detectives with guns and flashlights searched the building. We don't expect any trouble but we want to be ready for any a uniformed policeman said. "We hadn't had any threats or anything like that but we're going to be ready in case anything happens." Police even checked all cases that was brought into the building, including camera bags, portable picture transmitters and other darkroom equipment.
