Memphis World Memphis World Publishing Co. 1951-04-24 Lewis O. Swingler MEMPHIS WORLD Pastor Says WORLD Serves Great Need In Memphis The Memphis World is a leading influence in the City of Memphis for information, good-will, economic security and better race relations. I have been reading the Memphis World for the past ten years ten years or there about, and I am thoroughly convinced that it is one of the best semi-weekly newspapers in the state, It can boast of having one of the most wide awake, efficient editors in the state or any other state, in the person of Editor Lewis O. Swingler. I feel it is my duty to commend this wonderful paper and this great editor to the citizenry of Memphis and also to the state as a whole. I know it is my duly as one of the leaders in the field of Christian Education to endorse a great enterprise like this. The Memphis World Publishing Co. There is no paper published in the state that is more liberal in publishing church news than the Memphis World, unless it is an, official organ of some church or denomination. I believe I can truthfully say that the Memphis World is the only semi-weekly newspaper that is published and distributed in Memphis and adjoining towns by members of the colored race. This paper has become a fixture in our home, therefore we must have it twice each week and would have it every day if it were published every day. Every home in Memphis would do well to take this very excellent paper, especially the homes of the colored race. I do not mean that people of the white race should not take it also, because we read and subscribe for pretty well everything they publish. But I do think if anyone fails to read it each week it certainly should not be a member of the colored race. It would be a fine idea it the churches of Memphis and other communities would dispose of a number of copies each Sunday for their constituents. -Rev. C. M. Court Rules police powers of the State to operate institutions upon "established usages, customs and traditions." Judge Taylor held that Supreme Court decisions have "well-settled that exercise of the State's police powers ceases to be valid when it violates the prohibitions of the 14th amendment." While Judge Taylor confined his decision to the graduate and law schools his opinion may also open other professional schools of the University. The case resulted from a decision of the universitys board of trustees at Memphis on December 4 rejecting the applications of six Tennessee citizens, including the four plaintiffs. A three judge federal panel had ruled earlier that the plaintiffs must seek relief through federal Courts, and ordered the case tried before Judge Taylor in the United States District Court. The panel of Judges, Shackelford Miller; Jr.. of Louisville; Leslie R. Darr, of Chattanooga: and Robert L. Taylor, of Knoxville, said the question before them was that of discrimination and violation of the 14th amendment to the federal constitution. How To Save A Life The American Cancer Society has a sensible approach to the problem of how to save lives from a disease whose cause is un known. Its method is to teach the individual the seven danger signals of cancer and remind him that although they may not mean cancer, the commonsense reaction is to see his family doctor and make sure. When detected early, cancer can be cured. Teaching cancer fats, like anything else, relies on repetition. For that reason we are printing here the seven danger signals that you may have seen in our newspaper columns. 1. Any sore that does not heal, 2. A lump of thickening in the breast of elsewhere. 3. Unusual bleeding or discharge. 4. Any charge in a wart or mole. 5. Persistent indigestion or difficulty in swallowing. 6. Persistent hoarseness or cough. 7. Any change in normal bowel habits. These may mean cancer; they should always mean a visit to your doctor. The best way to reduce the cancer death toll—estimated at 210,000 persons this year—is to start by saving one life—your own. Another sensible step is to see to it that the people who are fighting cancer have the funds they need. In addition to wide spread public and professional education, the American Cancel Society performs many services to cancer patients and supports a multi-million dollar research program. An extra dollar contributed by, you will speed the day when cancer no longer, will be a major health menace. Just Arrived!
