Grider In Tribute To Evening Grads "You are headed in the right direction," Cong. George W. Grider told Booker T. Washington Evening School graduates at their commencement Thursday night in the Music Hall of The Auditorium. "Unlike most of those graduating this month, your journey has been harder. But so are the fruits of success sweeter," he said. "Many Of you have felt the harsh penalties that await the uneducated. Indeed, this is the spur that turned many of you back into the classroom. And this same force is certain to have stimulated your curosity. "You must surely know that education does not end with this diploma you gain tonight. And, if you have learned nothing ether than you you still have much to learn, then you have learned the most important lesson of all. "If you have studied history, your ourosity has certainly been piqued to learn more. In mathematics the surface which you have scratched overs a great treasure. "If you operate a lathe, you see its imperfections and yearn to operate a better lathe in a better way. If you repair a carburetor, you see in it a crude model T of tomorrow's mechanism. "That is what education, is. . . a striving to improve with today's knowledge the produce of tomorrow — be it machinery, society or government." EARN EXTRA CASH Come On Fellows Let's Go Sell If You Are 11 or Older Come In Or Call 1965-SEASON OPENS FRIDAY, JUNE 18 SPIKING FIGHT FIX TALK — Former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano refused to join the chorus of "fake" and "fix" in discussing the controversial Cassius Clay-Sonny Liston fight to Marion E. Jackson sports editor of the Atlanta Daily World; Paul Jones, Atlanta wrestling promoter and Curtis R. Cosby, sportsman at a press-radio-TV reception at the Atlanta Cabana Motel. Rocky Marciano Blames "Ring Rustiness" For Liston Kayo Rocky Marciano, one-time world heavyweight champion, denied that there was an sleight-of-hand or trickery in the controversial knockout of Sonny Liston by Cassius Clay in the first round of their title fight in Lewiston, Maine. The Brockton, Mass blockbuster, who gained the title himself in a one - round knockout of Jersey Joe Walcott, blamed "ring rustiness" for Liston's quick kayo. Marciano was an "eye-witness" to the Clay-Liston rematch, which was the climax of nine rounds of fighting in four world heavyweight title matches. Liston won two first - round kayos over Floyd Patterson, lost to the Louisville Lip in six, and took it on the chin again last Tuesday in a one minute, one - round fiasco. Clay won over Listen in sixtyseconds, a record for the pugilistic sport. Marciano also had some observations to make about the sudden end of the title bout, and the shortright hand punch with Clay credits for the knockout. Marciano said that Walcott, who he personally twice defeated in title fights, became "confused and took their word." He said that actually Walcott did not have to accept their judgement because Clay fail ed to retire to a neutral knockdown after scoring the final knockdown and that therefore the exact moment when the knockdown count was to begin was up to Walcott as referee. As for the punch, Rocky said he just "couldn't believe what I saw. He said that because of the tax situation, it is not profitable for a champion to defend his title moro than once a year. Liston, he pointed out, had two widely - spread title fights against Floyd Patterson and then his seven - round first fight against Clay with long periods of idleness between each. FISHING LINE By DICK WOLFF Researchers have announced that fishing is one of the very best ways to "clear the cobwebs" from our minds and rid ourselves of work-a-day tensions. Millions of fishermen have known that for years, Fishing means relaxing to most fishermen, Ever notice the contented look on a man's (or woman's) face as he sorts through his tackle box, picking out a favorite ABU-Reflex or other lure? Some fishermen, though, fall into the unhappy habit of basing a "good day's fishing" on the number of fish they catch. No fish, or only few, and they are likely to get upset—sometimes downright irritable. These folks are missing most of the fun of fishing—and they certainly aren't relaxing. Catching a "limit" of sich overshadows all thought of getting as must fresh air, sunshine and enjoyment as possible. They overlook the pleasure of making perfect casts with Garcia tackle and the natural beauty of unspoiled surroundings. Even getting ready for a fishing trip should quicken the pulse, and the anticipation of the out-of-doors should take the mind off everyday problems. Next time you sit down to wind some new Super-Platyl monofilament line on your Mitchell or Ambassadeur reel, or try some back yard practice casting, consider how you measure your fishing fun. Fishing is not a competition — even though there are many contests (for youngsters, especially) which emphasize catching a lot of fish. Putting a fish back for the future is lots more rewarding than bringing it home and ending its recreational value forever. Fishermen who develop the reputation for returning some fish to the water never have to "prove" they caught a "limit" by showing a full stringer or creel, either. Fishing offers something new and a lot of excitement each time you go afield. It offers a real chance to become completely absorbed in the fun at hand, "away from it all." So if the fish are few, remember there's always another day. You're bringing home a revitalized spirit (and probably a big, healthy appetite) every time that's a full stringer in any man's sport. VIEWS OF REAL ESTATE The term morale was perhaps first associated with the military world. Today it is applicable to most of life's endeavors. Such words as courage, confidence, zeal, trust and mutual interests are suggestive of what is involved. One writer drew upon a useful analogy when he said, "We all know what is meant when we say the morale of a regiment is low. It means that the heart is out of them. They are a sloppy, undisciplined bunch, with no pride in themselves, no faith in their cause, no confidence in their officers. They are a poor fighting machine, not because they lack the knowledge of how to fight or the physial ability to fight, fait because they lack the combined will to fight, the determination, to stand up to their individual fears together and to make a go of it." We say quite simply, "The fight is out of them, and we usually mean that we suspect that they will panic like jack rabbits from the shadow of an old cow against the mist." The existence of a poor level of morale in a sales force may be reflected in a heavy rate of turnover, by failure to, perform effectively as measured by honest standards, by stress on paty grievances, and by general failure to grow in capacity through failure training and the lessons of experience. It is very bad for any person when he feels he or she cannot learn anything in selling by formal training. Morale is a deep-seated expression of many attitudes and is, therefore, not basically changed by variations in the success of selling activities. Clay's Wife Says Champion Plans Two Fights This Year World heavyweight champion Cassius Clay plans to defend his crown twice more this year, his wife said Friday, May 28, and she doesn't like it. Mrs. Muhammed All, who left her husband in Lewiston, Maine, to look for living quarters for, them here, said she would prefer he take some time off" so we can go away for a vacation together." "He's been talking about fighting Floyd Patterson," she said, "but in Lewiston, he saw George Chuvalo in the crowd and pointed at him and said 'you're the one I want." Her objection to two move title defenses, she said, was the since they were married last August, "he's been in training all the time." "If he, fights, twice more this yuar, she went on, "he'll be in training the rest of the year, and we won't have any time together. We haven't had any since we've been married, I met him last July and we were married in August." Mrs. Ali, instating on recognition by the Black Muslim name, was accompanied by her sister at Essex Inn, her headquarters while she looks for a place to live. "He wants me to find a house for us," she said, "and I want a home. Our apartment was completely burned out last winter, and we don't have any place. But I don't know whether I want to live in Chicago. I'd like to go to Mexico City or Hawaii for a vacation before we do anything." Mrs. Ali accompanied her husband on his bus trip from Chicopee Falls, Mass., to Lewiston for the fight and return, and she said "that's no way to travel." Graduates With Honors After Crashing Color Bar At Clemson Harvey Ganit, who broke South Carolina's; school color barrier, graduates with honors from Clemso University Saturday, disappointed that only a few Negroes have tried to enter his alma mater. His father, a Charleston shipyard worker and mother drove up from the port city for the commencement. Gantt, now 22, entered the statesupported school in January of 1963 under court order, and under a strong security watch his admission, in contrast with the riot-torn desegregation of the University of Mississippi a few months earlier, was totally peaceful. "Most people, had the taste of Mississippi in their mind," Gantt recalled. "I never expected it would he as rough as in Mississippi, but also never expected it would be as easy as it turned out to be." In Tuscaloosa, Ala., Vivian Juanita Malone, the Negro who walked past Gov. George. C. Wallace's tamed "stand in the school house door," reported a similar experience. Miss Malone, who graduated Sunday, said that on the whole she had "a very happy time." Gantt attributed the initial peace at Clemson to "intelligent leadership and the good manners of the people of South Carolina. South Carolina is not Mississippi." "From then on," he said, "it was a matter of the students and myself." After his first day on campus Gantt avoided publicity, fielding only a few questions from newsmen and none while school was in session. "During the first few months matt students were indifferent," Gantt recalled. "Only a small group acted rather hostile. After the curiosity and the novelty wore off I had an easy time. "Today I believe the atteitude of the Clemson student body is acceptance of a Negro student as a thing he can live with." Gantt expressed disappointment that only a few Negroes have sought to enter Clemson. He said he understood there were only three other Negro students at the university this semester. "I have talked to many students about coming here. Many of them don't know what's available at Clemson. Many feel a court order is still needed. It isn't. "They have been used to a pattern too low," Gantt explained. "They ire going to bling at the bright lights then open their eyes." Gantt, who transferred here from Iowa State, complied a "B" average at Clemson, majoring in architecture. He starts work next month with A. G. Odell and Associates at Charlotte, N. C., which he termed, "one of the leading architectural firms in the Southeast." Dodgers Return Junior Gilliam To Active Status The Los Angeles Dodgers returned coach Jim Gilliam to player status Friday, May 28 in an attempt to bolster the league leaders both offensively and defensively. Gilliam, 36, regarded as a definite possibility to become the major league's first Negro manager, retired as an active player at the close of the 1964 season. But manager Walt Alston said the switch-hitting Gilliam would be reactivated immediately to assist the lighthitting Dodgers. "I'm glad to be back in the active ranks," said Gilliam, "I think I can help the club and that's all that counts." He will continue to coach. Regarded for most of his 12 major league years as one of the most knowledgeable men in the game, Gilliam will be a utility, player as long as the Dodgers need him. He is caable of playing second base, third base of the outfield. Gilliam, Rookie of the Year in 1953, has kept fit by taking infield drills regularly. The Dodgers have had infield injury problems, with both Maury Wills and John Kennedy being sidelined periodically. GUARANTEE The Marquess of Exter, the president of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, has issued a stern warning to the NCAA-backed stooge — the U. S. Track and Field Federation — that is recognizes on the Amateur Athletic Union as America's official certifying agent for all international competition. This should have nudged the slightly bewildered NCAA back into its own cloistered domain, the only can they were designed to handle, but the power grab had become so fascinating that the greedy culprits could not retreat. Since the AAU never pretended it had any authority over either the NCAA or the NAIA for that matter, the treachery of the dual sanctioning gimmick was to give the NCAA-sponsored U. S. Track and Field Federation a wedge in its bid for recognition before the International Amateur Federation. For science and technology will put us embarrassingly before international competition next July when the USA-Russia meet begins. For our competition will stand in bold relief as a "house divided" and the resulting deterioration of our once proud track and field stalwarts will have a calamitous backwash on all our culture. This should not happen. The commentary accompanying the Soviet pictures will be furnished by a team of American Broadcasting Company announcers. ABC will also previde a producer and director who will work with the Soviet crews. This television first is likely to be less dramatic if the United States send a patched up track and field team. That is minus the tiptop stars of our colleges and Universities, who with legibility remaining in their respective institutions, would be denied a chance to go abroad. What we face is a sad hour in American competition unless the NCAA and the AAU find accord, There is still time for this to happen, but the hour glass does not give us hope!
