Judge Waring's Great Speech The General Conference of the AME Church, convening in Chicago made a notable contribution when it featured for its gatherring the appearance of Judge J. Waites Waring. The sentiments and philosophies of the judge are too well and widely known for one to go into an introduction. For one to not know and agree with him would be saying that he is not an American. The able judge gave to the citizens assembled at Chicago and the world the wholesome preambles and intent of the Constitution of the United States. On the front of social justice and civil rights, there was never a more prolific prophet nor a bolder fighter on the frontier of America's approach for true liberty. When he said in the conclusion of one of the greatest utterances since Lincoln stood inspired at Gettysburgh, "We do not want gifts, we want rights," ho fired the shot to be heard around the world. That is where we come in as a tree people, in many quarters where black folk struggle for better social, economic and educational opportunities, there are those who, in the end, say "we are giving them something." The judge lifted our rejected group above the status of the panhandle, the indigent sitting on the corner holding a cup for alms, to the table of American liberty. He hoisted them from the sputtering flesh pots in the backyard of human liberties and placed them around the bargain counter where men meet as equals under the law. Said the judge: "We want no Chamberlain umbrella appeasement." In that great Chicago speech, he coined and handed out to the world that memorable phrase: "We do not want the chains of slavery gold plated, we want them stricken off." Truly there are few greater exponents of civil liberties and genuine equality in America today than Judge Waring. His injunction that what is meant by State Rights, is the continuation of the Negro as a second class citizen cannot be over emphasized. Ours is a great fight, with a long tedious journey ahead of us and here is food from a great American that will cheer and invigorate us on our way. May his number multiply to the end that he himself portrayed in his last words, "Let us cease singing the hymn of hate and sing the Battle Hymn of the Republic, that a race of lost Americans' might join in the grand chorus: "MINE EYES HAVE SEEN THE GLORY OF THE COMING OF THE LORD." What Is Subversive? Singled out by a New Jersey group which is supposed to be representative of "good" citizens of this country, has been Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, in a manner only too characteristic of the smear technique which infests the U.S. Today. An American Legion Auxiliary "postponed" hearing her speak, because of charges she is "subversive." The time has come, then, to raise the question: what is being subversive? Is it subversive of our American traditions and ideals for a Negro woman to build a school in the South, starting it on a dump heap and raising it by personal efforts over more than 40 years to an accredited college with properties worth more than a million dollars? Is it subversive to employ a remarkable administrative odility, not for personal profit, but to raise the living and educational standards of a submerged section of our population? To speak with such conviction constantly in favor of peace and justice and human rights that great-leaders in our Nation, including two Presidents, have listened and approved? To live a blameless life for four score years, according to the precepts of the Sermon on the Mount, carrying out every step of the way the teachings of Jesus? To make the campus of the school she founded a site where true democracy is practiced, with no bars raised against anyone because of race, color or religion? . . To love young people and serve as their leader over a lifetime, instilling in them the ideals of human brotherhood?. To summon the leading women of the U. S. in a conference whose aim was the mobilization of all women everywhere in a crusade for peace and understanding? Or is it subversive to smear, without cause, a woman of great achievement, to humiliate her publicly and to interfere with her democratic right of free speech? Those of us who have known Mary McLeod Bethune, through the years, from the days of her physical vigor, when she labored with her own hands, teaching by example as well as precept, to today, when time has cut down her physical forces and turned to snow the tresses which frame her wonderful black face, know the answer to these questions without equivocation. In the fullest meaning of the word Mary McLeod Bethune has been and is a true. American in spirit and in deed. No smear can destroy the harvest of her lifetime of service to her Country. Her record needs no "checkup." But episodes such as the attack made upon her in New Jersey can make us fear for the ideals which have been the basic philosophy of our Nation. Who is safe from the true subversive? — L. R. D Staying Alive With the peak of the travel season near at hand; this is a proper time to remind readers that vacations are enjoyed most when the vacationers return home alive. Each year thousands of Americans start out enthusiastically on summer vacations and never return to their homes, having become victims of their own carelessness of some other drivers' carelessness on the highway. This is one of the great tragedies on the American scene and the death toll resulting must somehow be cut down. The annual death rate on the highways exceeds the rate in Korea. Before leaving on your 1952 vacation, it is suggested that you determine not to hurry, even though your time may be limited. Haste, carelessness, and defective automobiles cause most highway tragedies. If you will practice patience and courtesy on the highway, carefulness, and be sure your car is mechanically sound, chances are you will return from this year's vacation sound and refreshed. BETWEEN THE LINES Figuratively speaking the Jews have gone to Palestine and built a "nation in a day." The great work wrought there is one of the miracles of modern times. But the Jews have been driven through oppression to hang together as well as hang separately. They have been hanged both ways but they always come back. It has been aptly said that you can't whip a man who will c o m e back for one more round. The Jews always come back. Because they do they are the inspiration of the ages. When Grant was appointed commander-in-chief of the Union forces under. Lincoln, the charge was made that Grant was a drunkard. Lincoln's answer to this charge was "Please tell me the kind of liquor he drinks I am recommending it for all my generals." Grant, was given command and he not only hung around Richmond, but he made Lee, the then current southern good, bow at Appomattox. The Point, here is, the Negro, should observe closely how the Jews get things, done and go and do likewise. Then remarked the announcer: "Gentlemen and ladies, yen see here something you have never seen before and will never see again, three Negroes all pulling together." Nearly eleven-tenths of what the man said was true. It is hard to get Negroes together on any one point, not that the masses are lack ing in followership; but the leadership is divided hopelessly. Too often the headlines and a specious popularity are the real objectives of the leaders and not the objectives of the masses. We might add too often the exchequer of the leader has the paramour consideration. Every organization of Negroes is on the eve of a split. One Negro refuses to follow another, and so tie pulls out with his crowd. Even if a crowd pulled out to organize a grand-united order of struggles hell-bound there would Be those to join it. What ever foolishness the Negro masses may evince they may be abundantly pardoned at is too often the stupidity and the cupidity of this leadership that does the damage. Within a few months Negroes will be called upon to help elect a President of these United States. It is difficult to imagine a more hopeless array; of candidates. JACKSON COLUMBUS, Ga. — (SNS) —In close elections, the Negro vote in Muscogee County, or Columbus, Ga., is regarded as the balance of power. On the eve of election, this reporter and Percy Lee Taylor, editor and publisher of the Columbus, World, journeyed around the city, chatting" with both politicians and political action leaders. Politicians openly admitted that the Negro vote was a factor here. Civic leaders in Columbus opened the fight which resulted in removing the racial barriers in the Democratic primary. Georgia sought to get, around the 8-to1 decision by the U. S. Supreme Court in the Smith vs. Allwright case of April 3, 1944 which paved the way for the restoration of the Negro vote where it could count. In the name of the Rev. Primus E. King, a barber and minister, a suit was filed against the club-style Georgia "white only primary." In April, 1946 the U. S. Supreme Court gave its negative approval of a lower court decision opening the Georgia Democratic primary to Negro voters. Since winning the ballot eight, years ago Negro leaders have watched policemen of their group be added, witnessed an increased amount of recreational opportunities "(a new park is to be built) Less alleged abuse of Negro Soldiers is heard and the general, atmosphere of the community has a better, cultural odor. People in this city are living politics and talking voting. Walking to the office of the Columbus World from the railroad station I watched placards and signs urging the people to "Vote as you please but please vote." In the stores, cafes and on the streets voting was on the lips of the people with an election coming up. The ordinary man is feeling the power of the ballot which brings to him benefits which begging cannot get nor money. A non-voter by the nature of his zero political status, shows that he places a low valuation on democracy. While it appears, that Columbus leaders sense this vital importance of voting, things are far from ideal. The non-partisans league of voters is split up into feuding factions. Court battles are being fought over the title. Some politicians are trying to secure voters through the discredited barbecueand-beer appeal. What is the status of Negro voting in the other 23 counties? Ben Hill, Chattahoochee. Clay, Crisp, Dodge, Dooly, Harris, Houston, Lee, Macon, Marlon, Peach, Pulaski, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Taylor, Terrell, Turner, Webster and Wilcox. Until the leaders begin to examine the status of the Negro vote on a Congressional District level, building leadership at the branchhead in the sagebrush area, political freedom will remain an elusive pursuit, it seems to me. WISHING WELL Registered U. S. Patent Office. HERE is a pleasant little game that will give you a message every day. It is a numerical puzzle designed to spell out your fortune. Democrats Warn Against Progressive Compromise Four democracratic presidential aspirants warned, their party Saturday against compromising on progressive principles such as civil rights and urged a continued strong foreign aid program. Mutual security administrator W. Averell Harriman. Sen. Estes Kefauver of Tennessee, Sen. Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota and Sen. Brien McMahon of Connecticut joined in sounding this theme in addresses before Americans for democratic action. President Truman is expected to voice similar views when he delivers a "major" speech tonight to the some 700 delegates to the fifth annual convention of the Ada, a liberal anti communist political organization. Harriman declared that the U. S. has the Russians "on the run" and said "we've got to keep them on the run "He warned against trying to "compress' the nation's survival into a pre-conceived budget. The foreign aid chief asserted: "The danger is not abroad this year-the danger is right here in the United States. The fundamental issue is wheither we have con fidence in the people of this country and ourselves that we can move forward at home and abroad. "Anybody trying to compress the survival and security of the United, States into a pre-conveived idea of a budget is doing a great disservice to our country." Humphrey, Minnesota's "favorite son" candidate, blasted republican hopefuls like Gen. Eisenhower and pointedly warned democrats who want to "compromise' the civil rights plank in their party's platform. He declared: "I say in all solemnity that the democratic party does not deserve to endure if it equivocates on the issue of civil rights." McMahon also asserted that "there can be no compromise on civil rights" and called a 'point five" program of American people working to help peoples abroad. Kefauver said the American people are "not afraid" of progress. But he added that "progressives" face a crucial test this year and must stand for liberalism both at home and abroad. He said: "you can't be a liberal overseas and a reactionary at home. That is impossible. A reactionary domestic policy means a reactionary foreign policy, and make no mistake about that." CAVE-IN KILLS 4 BOYS Seven boys were pinned under tons of earth when the banks of a 9-foot excavation for a sewer line crashed down on them. Dust raised by the cave-in attracted Mrs. Emso Howard, who lived nearby. She ran to the scene with a shovel and began screaming for help. Police and firemen, working frantically, rescued three of the boys but four of the boys were suffocated under the sand befor thier bodies could be found. DOG DETECTIVE Found grieving beside the body of his master, Demetrio Saurez, 45-year-old garden worker, who had been stabbed to death. Falucho, a black mongrel dog, was taken to police headquarters where suspects in the case were being held. When Ismael Romero, 24, appeared, Falucho tried to attack him. Romero later admitted stabbing Saurez in argument. Yergan Urges Negroes To Shun Red Party Dr. Max Yergan, who testified before the Internal Security. Subcommittee of the Senate Judiciary Committee concerning his past Communist associations but denied he was a Communist, last Tuesday urged colored peoples to shun Communism as they would a poison. In a prepared statement Issued to the press, he said: "It is my considered opinion that Communism, its agents and its dupes constitute one of the deadliest dangers to freedom, democray, and therefore our coun try today. "It is for this reason that I appear voluntarily before this committee which is rendering vital service to our country in routing out and exposing the activities and influence of Communists in the most important aspects of our national life today. "I testify, with a sense of conscious pride in my American citizenship, my membership of the Negro race, and the fact that my three sons serve as officers in the United States Air Force. "My experience leads me to the strongest possible conviction that the Communist, forces mean, no good to Negroes in America, to the people of Africa, or to other hither to underprivileged people who now seek arid are on the threshold of a better life. "I speak here out of ah experience of nearly twenty years in Africa as an executive of the Young Men's Christian Association, as a lecturer in Negro history at the College of the City of New York, and more recently as the founder of the Council on African Affairs, president of the National Negro Congress, and a less active member of a number of other organizations which by every test are quite accurately described as Communist fronts. "I founded the Council on African Affairs, but to my everlasting shame I permitted the Communists to take, control of it, and it is with a sense of shame also that I recall that. I was among those duped by Communists and other organizations. "They look in vain who expect moral leadership or even wise political guidance from Communists for those who desire and work for on ever widening democracy. THE NATION CAPITAL The next Recorder of Deeds of the District of Columbia won't be anyone who aided in getting President Truman in the mess in which he now finds himself. Up until the time he nominated Earl Wayne Beck, a Kansas City political crony, anyone had the right to do anything he wished to get the appointment as a successor to the Rev. Marshall Shepard, now the Philadelphia Recorder of Deeds. But after Mr. Truman nominated Beck, the Administration considers It lese majesty for any Government employee to have done anything to block Beck's confirmation. Somebody circulated among Senators and Representatives photostat copies of articles which ran in the Kansas City Star back in 1939 and 1940 concerning an investigation of charges that Beck had mismanaged the Jackson County (Missouri) home for delinquent colored boys and girls and had maltreated his wards. These Charges were me basis of the Senate District of Columbia Committee's investigation of Beck's fitness to be the Recorder of Deeds here, although the committee voted to report his nomination unfavorably as a slap at Mr. Truman. If the House passes the Senateapproved bill to take away from the President the power to appoint the Recorder of Deeds and give It to the Commissioners of the District of Columbia, and if Mr. Truman approves the measure, somebody like John R. Pinkett, Sr., or Joe Greene, both real estate operators, ought to get the job. Their reputations are as clean as a hound's teeth and either one of them would lend dignity and respectability to the office. There are other residents of the District of Columbia whose availability local civic associations can well begin, to consider. Another "iffy" proposition: If the bill becomes law, the District of Columbia Democratic Central Committee, of which "Jiggs" Donohue a District Commissioner, is a member has a candidate, but William L. Houston, the committee treasurer isn't divulging his name. Judge Almond W. Scott of the District of Columbia Municipal Court and Mrs. Scott attended Pre– sident and Mrs. Truman's reception to the Judiciary at the White House the other evening, but Judge Andrew J. Howard of the same court and Mrs. Howard who were invited, did not attend for some reason. Columbia Lodge of Elks here has endorsed Herb Jones, grand organizer, to succeed the late Finley Wilson as grand exalted ruler of the Elks, but Morning Star Lodge is supporting Bob Johnson of Philadelphia, the acting grand exalted ruler. The Merrill Curtises (Pearl) — he's the eye specialist — wrote friends from Lucerne (Switzerland) that her health is improved and they'll be returning home soon They've been touring Europe. Belford V. Lawson, the lawyer, has been doing a bit of hopping about He spoke recently at Wiley University in Texas and last weekend he attended the Alpha Phi Alpha regional conference in Pittsburgh. . . . Lawrence Oxley of the Labor Department attended sessions of the National Pan-Hellenic Council at Northwestern University, Evanston (Illinois). The Baltimore Boys Choir was a hit at its Arlington (Virginia) performance before an unsegregated audience in the Washington-Lee Hi School for white students. Billy Woodson, the ABC Board inspector, was initiated into the" Wash ington Alumni Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Saturday night. Hosts to the brothers after the initiation were Frederick Barnes Edward Cardwell Samuel Covington, A. H. Maloney, Tom Parks, Garland Pinkston, Wendell Quinn, A. L. Spencer, W. S. (Turkey) Thompson, Bill Taylor, William Vivette, Gregory Wood, Theodore Dean, Leonard F. Turner, J. Wesley Bevans, Alvin Rucker and Charles Wesley. Incidentally, C. K. Brown, "the elder statesman," is tossing a stag party at his home, 1510 Jackson Street northeast, Saturday night, May 31, for Kappas. Representative Bill Dawson, Democrat, of Illinois, will receive the award of the title "Man of the Year from the Maryland State Conference of the NAACP in Baltimore Saturday. As vice chairman of the Democratic National committee, Dawson attended the meeting in Chicago last Thursday of the Permanent Committee on Arrangements for the Democratic National Convention, of which he is a member. REVIEWING THE NEWS By WILLIAM GORDON Managing Editor Atlanta Daily World Those of us who admire and maintain support for the President can appreciate his firm stand on the "Fair Deal Program." The fact that his broad stand for human rights over against material and property rights, has been very damaging to him in prestige and votes, has had little or no effects on his point of view and belief in the individual American. You can appreciate a man who is honest enough to face issues and problems on the basis of their worth and significance as they affect the total American population. There is little value in a man who goes around parading in a different light. The President, even at this late stage, has come out once more to emphasize his stand on the New Deal Program and call upon honest and faithful Americans to support such a platform in the coming election. It would be wise, as we see it for those who wish to be elected, to follow his advice. He is calling for support without compromise. No honest and true American can afford to be counted against respecting the President for the stand that he takes in interest of his party and the nation. Those, politicians who world distort and confuse the people with the interpretation of FEPC and other aspects of the New Deal, are doing so purely on political grounds which in the final analysis have no basis for a constructive program. We might go along with Senator Kefauver on the FEPC question up to the point where he insists on obtaining such a law purely on educational grounds. We realize, that education is a factor and a very important one indeed, but we doubt that such a program would be sufficiently effective in states and areas where, discrimination is still prevalent. Stern measures are needed in such areas where political forces and factions are allowed to twist and confuse the thinking of the people against a progressive program. The South and the rest of the nation has had a long time to use the educational approach in regard to employment practices. Very little if anything has been done along this line. The excuse always comes up that the time isn't ripe for this "sort pf thing or that to put such a practice into operation would do far more harm than good. Such excuses are always made by the leadership in various communities and the politicians who run the show. The masses have never been approached oh the matter of FEPC. Professional politicians are afraid to approach the masses on the question. The fact is, that the masses would be more inclined to work with such a program and that is what selfish interests and political factions don't want. It is time that we should stop kidding ourselves about what FEPC has to offer. There is far more in it for the good of the American people on a whole than pilitical leaders are willing to bring but. The masses today are far ahead of much of our leadership. This may account for the President's success. His ability to see this fact has placed him far ahead of most of his contemporaries. This might, well indicate why he maintains such high faith in individual Americans. HUNT (Pastor Mississippi Boulevard, Christian Church) There are three falsely imagined release in life.. Namely, bankruptcy, divorce, and death. Bankruptcy.. A release from nagging debts, divorce, a release from a nagging mate, death, a release from a nagging life. The first two are manmade. The last, God-made. Live right arid there will be no bankruptcy. Live right and there will be no divorce. Live right and death will be a glorious transition. One of the saddest, most tragic pictures is a broken home. I lived in one. My father, once, a wonderful father and great husband, fell a victim in his late years to a modern Delilah. And there followed a broken home. So many homes have been broken because a Delilah crept in and the ties of love snapped. A marriage may be consummated in love and the fires of love may burn brightly for a time Then, suddenly go out he big question arises 'Why?' What must be done to prevent love's severance? Well, men (husbands) keep up the little courtesies, the little attentions, Without these the wife's life becomes a ceaseless humdrum. Let your marriage be a ceaseless coutrship. Ladies, (wives), keep up your personal appearances. Let your life be a perpetual honeymoon. Another earthquake that shakes the foundation of married life is a stingy, Tightwad of a husband. Still another is a careless, spendthrift of a wife. Living beyond one's income has wrecked many a home. Too heavy credit installments, loan sharks, trying to live like the Smiths and the Jonses are termites of a married life. Careless house keeping, poor cooking, (feed the brute), will alienate the husband's affection. A double standard is a home wrecker. If it is okay for husband to smoke a cigar, the wife has a right to smoke a cigarette. If it is okay for the husband to have a girl friend, it is right for the wife to have a boy friend. All of these, things are grossly wrong in themselves. Away with the double standard. One standard for all and let Jesus' teaching be that standard. The great force that holds a couple together and makes the home sacred is love. Husband, love your wives". Likewise, wives, love your husbands. Family loyalty is a fruit of that love. Family loyalty impels each member, husband and wife, parent and child, to stand up for the rest of the family and preserve the family integrity. Wife, don't tell the public your husband's faults. Husband, don't tell the world your wife's, faults. Don't hang the family's soiled linens on the public clothes line. It is grandly true that there are millions and millions of fine husbands wives, families, homes. It is also grandly true that. "Home is not merely four square walls With pictures hung and gilded; Home is where affection calls, Where there are shrines the heart hath builded. "Husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church, and gave himself for it." Yes, Christ is loved that he gave Gave everything that He had... Eph. 5:25. That we poor, deluded, miserable, fallen, and sinful children might be forgiven, cleansed and redeemed. Let us, likewise love Jesus, our family, and all of God's children It you want to see Jesus you've got to love everybody. Even a nagging wife and a faithless husband! TEXT: HUSBAND, LOVE YOUR WIVES.
