Department of Justice was called upon recently by the NAACP Southeast regional office in Atlanta to investigate the ruthless midnight flogging of a Negro couple by six armed white men near Whiteburg, Ga. The NAACP asked the civil rights division to investigate "particularly since the assailant's purported to be acting under color of law." Affidavits of Mrs. Ailene Redwine and B. J. Johnson state that the unwarranted attack took place late Thursday evening, October 6. Mrs. Redwine was driven to a secluded wooded area, stripped and beaten in the glare of headlights and flogged with a leather strap by each of the men individually. B. J. Johnson was also beaten by the heavily armed men. Carroll County Sheriff Hugh Lee Lambert, confirmed the beatings and said he thought the floggers to be "local men." Rev. Amos O. Holmes, NAACP field secretary in Georgia, who investigated the beatings for the Association, said that he saw cuts and bruises on Mrs. Redwine's body at time of investigation. She was accused of "running around with white boys."
