"No Substitute For Victory" Politics as well as peace are riding on the outcome of the Korean truce talks. It is almost inevitable that if the negotiations collapse for good, the United Nations forces are going to step up their military operations. And in doing so, they're likely to be following some of the recommendations General MacArthur made before he was fired. Just a week ago, in fact, American bombers hit the Port of Rashin, only 20 odd miles from Russian Siberia. It had been bombed only once before—in the early days of the war—and then had an off-limits label pinned on it. The Pentagon said no, because it was too close to Russian territory and Washington didn't want any ticklish incidents arising from a bombardier's poor aim or mistake. But now it's a target, with Pentagon explaining it was the site of a heavy- Red build-up. It's quite natural for MacArthur's supporters to say "he told you so," for when the General was urging that Rashin be bombed, it was a build-up center then as well as now. Rashin is just one example of the expanded, devil-take-thehindmost operations the U-N probably will have to engage in, if the peace talks fold completely. This, of course, was just the basis for MacArthur's claim that the U-N was going to have to win a military victory before any honorable peace-settlement could be reached. An old Roman historian once wrote: "Anyone can' start a war, but it can be ended only with the consent of the victors," That was MacArthur's argument in a nutshell. There is every indication that the longer the Korean war goes on without a definite decision in sight, the more explaining the administration will have to do to the voters. In any event, MacArthur's statement "There is no substitute for victory" is resuming the proportions of a Republican battle cry. A cry that sounds louder with every gloomy bulletin from Korea that tells of continued deadlock and death. Rayco Seat Cover Co. Bible Reading, Prayer Unite The World NASHVILLE, TENN.— When the famous cartoonist, Tom Little; learned that more than 50,000 churches distribute the English edition of The Upper Room and that, through its sixteen editions, the circulation is world-wide, he made the above drawing to show how Bible reading and prayer and meditation can draw the people of the world together. The Upper Room in Japanese is the fittest growing of the foreign editions, although new editions in Europe are also reporting good progress Through the pages of this devotional guide, individuals and families share the same Bible reading, prayers, and meditations each day, not only in America, but around the world. The circulation of the English edition alone is believed to be the largest ever achieved by a religious periodical. The new September October issue carries meditations written by residents of 31 countries including Princess Wilhelmina, former queen of the Netherlands, and one Chinese who, since he wrote his meditation, has been liquidated by the Communists. THE HEALTH WORLD FORUM By R. EARL BLAND, M. D. Fate plays strange tricks. A 42 year old New Yorker, in the bestof health decided to trim the hedge along the side of his house. He struck a nest of yellow jackets and was stung on the forehead, back of the neck, and probably in the arm pit. Within three minutes he turned blue and began to froth at the mouth: in five minutes he was dead. The man was thought at first to have a heart attack but his physician finally came to the conclusion that sensitivity to the" sting of a yellow jacket was responsible. Three weeks prior to his death he had been stung on an arm and the entire limb puffed up like a balloon. Such, reactions after insect bites. usually are on an allergic basis: the individual is sensitive to the venom. As a rule the area swells and itches intensely; the lesion that arises after a mosquito bite is a typical example. The aftermath is more serious when greater sensitivity exists. In some the eyes become puffy and itching is excruciating others encounter asthma and sneezing and wheezing. A sense of uneasiness, rapid pulse and a fall in blood pressure also occur. Much depends upon the amount of venom injected and the degree of sensitivity. The ordinary insect, bite generally can be disregarded. Household ammonia or a wet pack may suffree, but physician should be consulted for the more violent reaction because emergency care may be required. Persons who are not sensitive to mosquito bites often assert that they never are bitten. This is not true: the insects like them as weil as anyone else, but when there is no reaction to the sting the person is unaware of having been bitten. Marked sensitivity to insects may be a hazard to men and women who work in the open. A rancher or farmer for example, who is sensitive to bees, wasps, or beetles must be on the lookout at all times, Desensitization may be necessary and stinging insect venoms are commercially available, but continuous treatment may be necessary because protection is short lived. President Oposes Wore Taxes For Cooperatives President Truman Tuesday announced, opposition to increase taxes on profits of cooperatives now under, consideration by the Senate Finance Committee. In a letter to James G. Patton, President of the National Farmers Union, Mr. Truman cited a 1948 plank in the Democratic Party Platform, and declared the administration has consistently supported cooperatives. The Senate tax-writers are considering a proposed new levy, estimated to provide a little more than 100 million dollars a year, to partially offset the 1.5 billion dollars already cut from the 7.2 billion House Bill. Chairman George (D) Ga., made the revenue estimate, as the committe continued a careful study of the proposal. Earlier, the group ruled out any general income levy on cooperatives, but several members indicated that the undistributed profits would provide a revenue source hither to untouched. I really visited one; and, this one took me to the homes of others. It goes without saying that we talked. And strange as it may seem, there was very little "shop-talk." Instead, we discussed such things as: the improved housing situation, the Boy Scouts, the problems of inflatior, the bus situation and schedules, the various, the extension of the city limits, the schools and their faculties. Somerville in the conventions I spoke of the improved (but no means ideal) state of affairs here in Memphis, and emphasized" that it appeared to me as if the improvement is still in progress. My host on the other hand, disagreed with one phase of my observations. The teachers are, in his opinion, worse than previously. Quite naturally then, I called his attention to the fact that the greater scholastic attainments of the present-day teachers are obvious and beyond question. Besides, the number of teachers possessing degrees and state certificates today, put in the shade the number similarly qualified years ago. However, my friend was no convinced. Since this man has children ranging from the lower grades through the high school he is naturally quite concerned over this matter. He did not dispute—indeed could not—the facts I mentioned; but he dwelt on moral rather than the scholastic aspect of teachers qualifications. It seems to him that while the paper qualifications of the teachers have evidently improved, their morals have been degraded. He thinks, in consequence, that the scholastic gains are offset by the losses in morals—if anything more so. That is, as I have said, his opinion. Also, I have heard others speak, in a similar vein. They may not be right (and I have my senous doubts); yet, that is the feeling a large portion of the public has, And, that in itself, alone, necessitates deliberation. Now; I have thought more of that accusation—after all that is all it can be, in as much as unquestionable proof is lacking. In this copnection I read with unusual inter something, somewhat similar Mrs. Ferguson's column in "The Memphis Press-Scimitar. Part it is follows: "For some year he (a disillusioned wife of a government employee) says. He (her husband)—carried on a love affair with one of his secretaries in the same office, This secretary, herself has openly admitted the liaison and refuses to break it up. In desperation, the wife went to see the head of the department, a man who is regarded as a person of integrity. "To her appeals that he use his influence to end the affair, he replied: "So long as they do their jobs well, their morals are none of my business." "I wonder how many readers agree. From what we hear this is not an uncommon attitude." Mrs. Ferguson goes on to discuss what the thinks about it, and she seems; to disagree with such an attitude. So, we could very well ponder what Jersey Joe Walcott said. That is what he wants to tell the children of America when he is through fighting. For this reason, Jerson Joe has been very favorably spoke of by many. Air Force Plans Moving Back To Morrison Field The Air Force wrapped up its plans Tuesday for moving back into Morrison Field, near West Palm Beach. Some 2,500 officers and men are to be stationed at the base, which will be used as an air rescue and resupply and communications wing. Plans have been announced for an $8-million building program. The airport use panel of the civil aeronautics board recommended last winter that the base be reactivated for air force use Civilian air lines, however, will continue to use a specified portion of the field. County commissioners were scheduled to sign a right of entry for the Air Force Tuesday.
