Memphis World Memphis World Publishing Co. 1960-06-22 Thaddeus T. Stokes Fallout Shelter Can Doable As Darkroom You can have your fallout shelter—and enjoy it too! Use it as a year-round darkroom and you will have a place to pursue your favorite hobby. If your basement celling is of average height or better, and foundation walls are of poured concrete or masonry construction, you can build a radiation-proof shelter in one corner at a minimum cost of $200. And for the added cost of a few square feet of ceramic tile, plus storage cabinets and sink, you can have a darkroom too. The prime darkroom need is for a floor and countertops that are surfaced with a chemical-proof material. Ceramic tile is ideal here. It's waterproof, impervious to photo chemicals and food stains, and can be wiped clean with a damp rag. A cheerful red quarry tile floor also adds color and warmth to a confined space and never needs any maintenance. For surfacing countertops—where photo trays and chemicals will be in use—either standard glazed tile or small ceramic mosaics is recommended. Sizing up your fallout shelter for a good double-duty use like this is important, but only after the shelter's basic needs have been planned for. For adequate protection against radiation, your basement shelter walls can be constructed of 8-inch thickness of similar material. The entrance need not have a door—but it must have at least one right angle turn to stop radiation. Ventilation openings should also be provided in the walls, and basement windows is should be blocked off when an emergency threatens. Highlander Summer Youth Project July 6 Rev. Ewell J. Reagin of Cornell University announced today that plans are well underway for the six week Highlander Summer Youth Project beginning July 6. High school students from Charleston, S. C.; Jacksonville, Fla.; Birmingham, Ala.; Clinton, Nashville, and Knoxville, and northern states are enrolled. Rev. Reagin, Director of the Project stated that applications are still being accepted from Negro and white young people from both North and South. The purpose of the program is to help prepare young people for entrance into integrated high schools and colleges. The program in creative arts and humanities will be led by an inter-racial stuff of professional camp leaders and teachers. A lake and two hundred acres provide a setting for such recreational activities as swimming, fishing, horseback riding and hiking. A group of Cornell students have been at the School for the past two weeks preparing building and grounds for the Youth Project. A full summer program of Highlander Workshops and Conferences is scheduled for men and women from Southern states. There will be a workshop on Voting and Registration, June 30. Booth Jr. to the Belgian Congo despite the clergyman's own reser vations about continuing the assigement. The action came on a snow -hands vote after Charles Parlin, lay delegate from Englewood, N. J. told the conference that Bishop Booth "is too close to this thing." "I think he has completely underestimated the natives of Africa desire for his return," he added. The 40-membe committee on episcopacy earlier recommended that Bishop Booth be re-assigned to the congo. Parlin told the delegates that a committee of one of the African conferences supervised by Bishop Booth had requested that the bishop not be returned to the Congo. It sold this was because of a strong sentiment for the election of a native bishop. Parlin also read several messages from clergymen and lay leaders of the Belgian Congo strongly urging that Bishop Booth be returned. Bishop Booth told the delegates that he dreaded leaving Africa after 16 years service there. But he said he thought it was time for the Cong to choose its own bishop from among its own people "especially sincere Congo will attain its political independence June 30.
