This week we shall give you some Cherished Christmas Carols. The first one was composed in a few short hours on Christmas eve in 1818, to fill an urgent need for a special Christmas song in a little Bavarian Church, this exquisite carol is a Yuletide favorite in practically every language in the Christian world its soothing music seems to recreate the very atmosphere of the humble manger birth nearly 2000 years ago. The words are by Joseph Mohr and music by Crazz Gruber: Silent night! Holy night All is calm, all is bright Round you virgin Mother and Child! Holy Infant, so tender and mild. Sleep in heavenly peace! Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent right! Holy night! Shepherd quake at the sight! Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavinly hosts sing, "Alleluia!' Christ, the Savior, is born! Christ the Savior is born. Silent might! night! Son on God, loves pure light it Radian beams from Thy holy face with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy Birth Jesus, Lord at Thy Birth! The stirring words of this beautiful bymn were written in 1719 by Isaac Walts, who has often been called the "Father of English Hymnody." Set to the tune of a spirited Handel melody, "Joy to the World" is one of our most popular Christmas hymns, suited to church use or outdoor caroling. Chrerished Christmas Carols, a very new book in your library, gives a very brief history of many of our most famous Christmas Carols. A leas familiar hymn is What Child Is This? A melody for this favorite English carol lullaby originally was the tune for a papular song, "Lady Green sleeves," in Shakespeare's time It was edited and arranged for carol use by Sir John Stainer, eminent composer and organist in the latter pant of the past century. Be sure to learn this tune that has a great future. SILENT NIGHT! HOLY NIGHT! by MAUDDEAN THOMPSON SEWARD To All The Readers of This Column: Merry Christmas and a Very Happy New Year!
