College Lets Black History A new full-color Black History with three dimensional "pop-up" features has just been published for all children by Tongaloo College, featuring panoramic paintings by a Black artist and designed by an Affiliate of Hallmark. The educators of this small Mississippi Black College, near Jackson, are celebrating their Centennial by contributing a brief history of eight "Great Black Americans" keyed especially to the five through nine year olds. It is hoped that when these pop-up books are used in integrated schools, this new colorful history will provide a much-needed new view of early American history. It willspread new pride in and respect for these and other Black heroes and horiones. This brief history booklet covers well - known leaders such as W. E. B. Dubois, Booker T. Washington and Frederick Douglas as well as some lesser knowns including Sojourner Truth and the interesting story of Joseph Cinque. The Black-artist, Emerson Terry, was raised in Ohio and now lives in Los Angeles, California where he and his wife are raising six children. Mr. Terry is an outstanding illustrator and these eight portraits are superb examples of his work. This new history booklet "Great Black Americans" is only available from the office of Development and Public Relations of Tougaloo College, Tougaloo, Miss. 39174. Copies are available for churches, groups and educational bodies. Lose 10 lbs. President Nixon's popularity has jumped to a new high in the latest nationwide surrey conducted following his Nov. 3 Vietnam speech and during the latter stages of the Nov. 13-15 anti-war demonstrations. Of the l,485 adults interviewed in 300 localities across the nation, 68 per cent say they approve of the way he is handling his overall job, while 19 percent disprove and 13 per cent disprove and 13 per cent do not express an opinion. The President's latest rating represents a dramatic 12-point gain from the previous survey conducted one month ago, Oct. 17-20, when 56 per cent of Americans voiced approval of his performance in office. That percentage was the President's lowest score to date. The President's previous high was 65 per cent approval and was recorded on four occasions: in mid-March, midMay and late May and most recently, in a survey conducted following the first moon landing, July 20. The President gains since the previous survey in late October have been registered among all major population groups, but have been most pronounced among men and persons living in the East. Key factors in the President's popularity gains are his speech, Nov. 3, outlining the administration's Vietnam policies and unfavorable reaction to the recent anti-war demonstrations. In a nationwide 500-interview survey conducted by telephone immediately following the President's Nov. 3 speech, the Gallup Poll found 77 per cent of those who had heard the speech in favor of President Nixon's plan for ending the war. It should be borne in mind that the survey taken at that time represented first reactions sad, the views of only those who had heard the speech. C. B. King May Run For Governor King was chosen by the more than 2,000 delegates over Dr. Horace Tate, who was defeated in his bid for Atlanta mayor in the recent Atlanta municipal elections, and legislator Julian Bond. What the endorsement means, a spokesman said, is that King will receive the support of black people throughout Georgia if he runs either in the Republican or Democratic primaries. The possibility was not ruled out that – should King fail to gain the nomination of either party – he might run as an independent. King was chosen because of his statewide, popularity among blacks at the grass roots level. King has been active for several years in civil rights campaigns throughout the state. The Albany attorney did not immediately accept the convention's endorsement, however. Rather, King told the delegates he wanted seven days to sound out blacks across the state to determine, as best he can, if he in fact is the choice of black Georgians in the race for governor. In an earlier address to the convention, Southern Christian Leadership Conference pres. Ralph David Abernathy told the delegates black voters can have a profound influence on the outcome of next year's gubernatorial election. There are already about 400,000 registered Negro voters in Georgia, Abernathy said. With a concentrated effort, he said, an additional 200,000 voters can be added to the rosters before the 1970 elections. Giant solar furnace is built by French. "Epidemic Of Fear" Created By Assaults In Jewish Area Assaults on aging Jewish residents in a neighborhood near the city's Roxbury black ghetto have created an "epidemic of fear," community leaders said Monday. Police said the increase in fear outpaced the increase in crime. Attacks, robberies and beatings have become frequent in the Jewish enclave bordering Roxbury, Dorchester and Matapan, according to Rabbi Mordecai Savitshy. "It's a terrible situation," he said. Police superintendent William Bradley said, "Many of the problems referred to are real. Many, however, are more of an intimidation by crowds of young people who roamthe areas at night. It doesn't seem to be aimed at Jews in the area but then again, they probably think they are being hit hard est because there are more of them in that particular section. "The people complaining are saying the assaults are mostly done by young blacks: Young, yes, but certainly not all blacks. "All races are involved as far as our investigations show." "The crimes mentioned reflect a change in the community," Bradley said. "We are doing our level best to stop them," "Savitsky said the crimes occur almost every couple of days." Major Kevin H. White announced he would increase police patrols in the area and give the officers guard dogs. The neighborhood is changing from an all white neighborhood to an integrated one. White House Xmas Tree From Ohio The Christmas tree for President and Mrs. Nixon's holiday festivities at the White House will be a product of northeastern Ohio. The 20-foot fir tree was donated by Roy Piercer, 60, of nearby Twin Lakes. It will mark the second time since 1967 that the official White House Christmas tree came from the area. The tree will be cut Dec. 8 and trucked to the White House the next day. Ampicilin May Become Drug Of Choice For VD With increasing numbers of gonococcal strains becoming penicillin-resistant, results of a comparative study of four antibiotics in 411 patients in the Pacific area indicate that sodium ampicillin may become "the drum of choice" for outpatient treatment of gonorrhea. These findings were reported in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association by a group of Naval physicians—LCDR Thomas F. Keys, MC, USNR; LCDR Charles W. Halverson, MSC, USN; and CDR Eugene J. Clarke, Jr., MC. USN. In a background reference, the authors noted another recent study reported that single injections of 2.4 million units of procaine penicillin G failed to cure 29 per cent of gonorrhea patients in the Western Pacific. Given this background, it seemed likely to the researchers that mutant gonococcal strains would continue to develop, requiring such large concentrations of penicillin as to make outpatient treatment impractice. The authors observed that from a therapeutic viewpoint, the ideal antibiotic should supply the most effective 'killing power' to the largest number of gonococcal strains." After considering the increasing number of penicillin-insensitive strains, "the authors concluded: "the general use of ampicillin appears preferable to pencillin." The four agents-penicillin, ampicillin, cepbaloridine, and kanamycin–were each injucted in single equivalent doses. Approximately 100 patients received each of the four anti biotics. Penicillin and ampicillin were accompanied by Polycillin N, a product of Bristol laboratories. The study rated as "excellent" both ampicillin with a 99 per cent cure rate, and penicillin with a 98 per cent cure rate. The rate of cure following kanamycln was termed "good" at 92 per cent, but the studycautioned of toxic side effects from the drug on the auditory nerve and kidneys. This warning is especially pertinent because, as the authors point out, the danger of toxicity increases with repeated use, and gonorrhea patients often have recurring infections requiring repeated treatment. Cephaloridine had an 84 per cent success and was rated only fair. Comparing ampicillin with penicillin on criteria other than "killing power," the study found that the serum antibiotic levels achieved with penicillin were "higher and more predictable." The study also noted that penicillin use results in a lower percentage of postgonococcal urethritis than therapy with ampicillin. The study comments on the production of mutant gonococcal strains, explaining they have developed primarily from the lack of local standardized medical treatment and the administration of "sublethal" doses of antibiotics to women in the area. The "authors observe: "until more effective means of diagnosis and treatment are achieved, the pattern of 'drug resistant gonorrhea will undoubtedly continue." Julian Bond to two firms which bid on a government contract, it was reported Saturday. Charles A. Black, president of Frontiers Unlimited, an Atlanta consulting firm which received a one-year $158,000 contract from the Office of Economic Opportunity, said FBI agents visited the OEO Nov. 19 to check records. He said the agents wanted to see if Bond who is part owner of Frontiers Unlimited had a conflict of interest through connections with another firm, Wright, Jackson, Brown, Williams, Stevens and Bond. Black said Bond had ended his relationship with the second firm before the OEO contract was let in June. He said a total of 10 companies entered bids on the contract which is for consulting work on community affairs in southeastern states.
