(Friday) of last week. The Alphas at the SheratonPeabody... and the Kappas at Rivermont. Both events are something that in Memphis to attending every Spring. We were invited over to the Brewer Table and also invited by a long time friend, Atty. A. A. Latting... and it was between these two tables that I divided my short stay... throughly enjoying both groups Glancing around, I noticed several more Alpha Men who had guests... and they were W. T. McDaniel, Thomas Perkins, Joe Westbrook, Fred Rivers, Walter Evans, Ernest Young and Leland Atkins. We understand that the Kappas also had a wonderful evening... with friends coming from all walks of life and from all corners of Memphis... Many of the guests expressed their hopes that they won't occur on the same evening another year. The marriage of Saturday evening at 6 of Miss EthelRhynette Northcross and William Hurd was the first Black marriage in the beautiful chapel of the Evergreen Presbyterian Church. A program of organ music was by Eddie Pryor and Charles Campbell sang "O Perfect Love." Decorations included four Candlabra trees that gowed and two large fans topped with glowing tapers. The pretty young bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Northcross. The bridegroom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon Hurd. Both are members of pioneer Memphis families whose names still stand put in the Memphis community. The pretty young bride, given in marriage by her handsome father, wore a lovely white peur de soie gown with a long train... and carried a bouquet of ivory roses buds. She and all of her attendants had naturals that were slightly covered... hers being by a veil of illusion dotted with rhinestones... and it fell from her youthful headpiece. Female attendants wore floorlength A-Line gowns and carried nosegays of rose buds Miss Debbie Northcross (just home from Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts where the bride also attends school, was her cousin's maid of honor. Other female attendants were Miss Bernice Judice of Houston...... Miss Sandra Simpson, Chicago... Miss Francine Guy, Miss Gwen Bowie, Miss Mildred Hurd, and Miss Sandra Hill all of Memphis. Leon Hurd, Jr. of Detroit Groomsmen were Thurman North cross, Jr. (the bride's brother who came home from Northcross, the bride's brother... Paul Smith of Weslyan College in Connecticut for his sister's wedding ... Danny Wilkinson, Neal Harris and Rochester Neely Jr. all of Memphis... Kenneth Northcross, the bride's brother.... Paul Smith of South Bend, Ind.... and Bill James also of Memphis. Little Thomas Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Williams, was ring bearer.. and pretty little Cynthia Brooks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Brooks, was the flower girl. He is working also in Lynn, Mass. for the General Electric Company. The couple will be living in Everett, Mass. They will leave this weekend on their honeymoon that will take them to Switzerland where he will play with the International Jazz Band. Carmella Rose Guy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Guy, Jr. of Memphis to Mr. Samuel A. Phelps of Atlanta. The wedding was performed at the home of the bride's parents with her grandfather, the distinguished Rev. W. L. Varnado (who was assisted by the Rev. S. A. Owen) officiated. The bride was beautiful in an informal gown of white chiffon that featured a mini. She too wore a natural... and was given in marriage by her father. A lovely reception was held in the Student Center on the LeMoyne College campus.. and immediately after the reception Miss Gertrude Walker entertained with a champagne party complimenting the couple and members of their young set... Here again everyone had a natural. There was also good food, good music and good company. Along with a lovely setting. We arrived late after a busy day at my husband's church... but did manage to see Mrs. Levi Watkins, "First Lady" at Alabama State before she pulled off with her younger son, James who was enroute to school. They who hall from Montgomery... and had double the joy of joining her older son, Dr. Levi Watkins, Jr. who was graduated from the medical school at Vanderbilt U. last week. Other members of the family who came from out-of-town were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Conic and Mrs. James Crawford all the bride's uncle and aunts who came from Jackson, Miss. Serving as hostesses of the evening were Miss Carol McDaniel, Miss Joyce Cochran, Miss Gwen Bowie and Miss Francine Guy. The couple left Monday for San Francisco where they will honeymoon and work during the summer months. The groom recently worked at Hampton but will work at Mrehouse College in the field of Mathematics come fall. Very much on the scene was the bride's attractive mother... Mrs. Guy and many friends who went on and on even after the reception had ended. To try to name Members of the college set who came from all over the country, would be a hard task. THE MACEO WALKERS ARE AGAIN IN THE NEWS. Both work hard (he at the Universal and at the Bank along with many other duties. She as a Home Maker) They also enjoy themselves. They are just back from the islands. (Freeport) where approximately 50 couples went for a fashionable Chicago Club's annual party.. Again they were thrilled over social activities last week. The Chicagoans carried down two bands with them.. and also took the famous Ramsey Lewis group. There was the President's Party... a Cocktail Dinner, Dancing party and this year it was given by Dr. and Mrs. J. Keith at the Holiday Inn in Freeport.. The Memphis couple marvelled over the Casino (said to be the most beautiful in the world and looking just like the Taj Mahal.. and the Bassar behind it. The Walkers were guests of the Ted Joneses of Chicago.. who also gave their special party.. Mr. and. Mrs. Walker had a party for their group at the Lucayan Beach Hotel and it was a cocktail-dinner dancing party. The main dance, that climaxed and it was at the King's Inn. and there were many others. Among the friends that they ran into were the Wendell Smith who took them to an Indian Villiage much like Las Vegas.. Mrs. Lucille Ish Matthews (Mrs. Walkee's sister who joined them there. Mr. and Mrs. Boxter Collier Dr. and Mrs. Maurice Gleason. Sunday was truly a busy one for us. Jimmy spoke at the Christian Fellowship Breakfast at his church, the Mississippi Blvd Christian Church with his post as Director of library Service in Dacca, East Pakistan.. and as Director of U. S. I. S. in Paris. MISS EDNA DOUGLAS Educator and Lecturer was speaker for the Church Women's Day program... and she was terrific. Miss Douglas, a native of Little Rock, a former national president of Sigma Gama Rho Sorority and of the Pan Hellenic Council stopped with Mr. and Mrs. Maceo Walker... and she was driven to Memphis by Mrs. Walker mother, Mrs. G. W. Stanley Ish, SR. The Walkers had company all Saturday evening and all day Sunday. MRS. BENNIE BOOTH CHARLES, who is no stranger in Memphis, is still around with her many friends and is house guests of Walterine and John Outlaw. MRS. Miss Gertrude Walker was in charge of the wedding.. and she was assisted at her beautifully decorated home in receiving by Miss Maydella Reeves. Mrs. Andrewnetta Jones was in charge of the reception. The couple left Monday for San Francisco where they will honeymoon and work during the summer months. The bride was graduated from the School of Nurshing at Hampton Institute and worked as a Pediatric Nurse at Johns Hopkins... The groom recently worked at Hampton but will work at Mrehouse College in the field of Mathematics come fall. Very much on the scene was the bride's attractive mother... Mrs. Guy and many friends who went on and on even after the reception had ended. A very proud person was the bride's stately grand mother, Mrs. Walter Guy Sr. The Guy-Phelps also joins two prominent families... and especially do they stand out in the field of education. Coming to Memphis with Beverly Guy was her handsome husband, Mr. Sheftall who is also on the faculty at Alabama State College.. The Chicagoans carried down two bands with them.. and also took the famous Ramsey Lewis group. There was the President's Party... a Cocktail Dinner, Dancing party and this year it was given by Dr. and Mrs. J. Keith at the Holiday Inn in Freeport.. The Memphis couple marvelled over the Casino (said to be the most beautiful in the world and looking just like the Taj Mahal.. and the Bassar behind it. The Walkers were guests of the Ted Joneses of Chicago.. who also gave their special party.. Mr. and. Mrs. Walker had a party for their group at the Lucayan Beach Hotel and it was a cocktail-dinner dancing party. The main dance, that climaxed and it was at the King's Inn. and there were many others. Among the friends that they ran into were the Wendell Smith who took them to an Indian Villiage much like Las Vegas.. Mrs. Lucille Ish Matthews (Mrs. Walkee's sister who joined them there. Mr. and Mrs. Boxter Collier Dr. and Mrs. Maurice Gleason. Sunday was truly a busy one for us. Jimmy spoke at the Christian Fellowship Breakfast at his church, the Mississippi Blvd Christian Church with his post as Director of library Service in Dacca, East Pakistan.. and as Director of U. S. I. S. in Paris. MISS EDNA DOUGLAS Educator and Lecturer was speaker for the Church Women's Day program... and she was terrific. Miss Douglas, a native of Little Rock, a former national president of Sigma Gama Rho Sorority and of the Pan Hellenic Council stopped with Mr. and Mrs. Maceo Walker... and she was driven to Memphis by Mrs. Walker mother, Mrs. G. W. Stanley Ish, SR. The Walkers had company all Saturday evening and all day Sunday. MRS. Glover, a junior home economics major at Memphis state University has received the first annual scholarship recognition award presented by the Memphis District Dietetics Association. Miss Glover, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luke A. Glover of 2450 Cable, is a 1965 graduate of Melrose High School. She expects to complete her dietetics major at MSU in December. Scholarship To Young Turner Eric Michael Turner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jessse H. Turner, has received an academic scholarship to Christian Brothers High School. Eric placed among 15 finalinsts vying for the scholarships and also among the finalists. This was an effort for competition for parochial 8th grade boys over the city and county. Eric also ranked first academically at Little Flowers closing ceremonies receivng trophy as an award. He also received a certificate of achievement (given each class member) and an award for safety patrol from Kiwanis International. He was president of his class and also president of the school wide civic club; a boy scout, a member of the football team, second place winner of the school's spelling bee, and an altar boy. Previously, Eric's brother Jesse, who desegregated CBHS, won first place academic honors as a freshman and graduated salutatorian, his brother Ray, achieved the first letterman award among blacks at CHBS at a freshman in 1965. Eric placed among 15 finalinsts vying for the scholarships and also among the finalists. Black Innkeeper At Holiday Inn Calvin Shepherd has been appointed Innkeeper of the Holiday Inn- Southwest in Memphis, according to District Director Leonard Hancock of Holiday Inns, Inc. Formerly restaurant manager of the Holiday InnSouthwest in Little Rock, Ark., Mr. Shepherd joined the company four years ago as a cook at the North Little Rock Inn and worked his way up to his present position. He served as restaurant manager at the Pine Bluff, Ark., Holiday Inn before his Little Rock assignment. A native of Magnolia, Ark, he attend Arkansas A.M.&.N. College in Pine Bluff and was graduated from Arkansas Baptist College in Little Rock with a major in sociology. Following college he served in the U. S. Army for 10 years, working in various food service jobs. Mr. Shepherd is an ordained minister and was formerly pastor of Rice Memorial Baptist Church in Little Rock. Jobs For Teenagers Black youngsters seeking summer jobs this year have at least one promising sources of potential employment their local post office. The Post Office Department has announced that approximately 7,000 temporary positions are to be filled by disadvantaged youth during the coming summer months. Hiring of the youth will be in accordance with the postal service's 1970 Summer Employment Program scheduled to rsn from June l3 through September 18. Being implemented for the third consecutive summer, the program provides a meaningful work experience for economically or educationally deprived youths, aged 16 to 21. Offer Course In Appraising Real Estate Appraisal II, a case study course for those seeking to become members of the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers, will be offered at Memphis State University, June 15-27. The course will be presented by the Tennessee-Memphis Chapter of the Institute in cooperation with the Bureau and Economic Research and the College of Business Administration of the University. Students will work with the essential appraising procedures regarding specific properties such as office and apartment buildings. Enrollment is open to those who have either passing grades for the Required Examination No. 1 or ar least five years experience in real e-s tate appraising. Nine hours of written examination for M. A. I. credit will be scheduled for the end of the course. Enrollment is limited to the first 100 person, in order of application. Fees for the course include tuition and conference fees totaling $170. Mrs. Barnett Is Surprised The past few weeks have been one of jubilation, surprise, and salutes for Mrs. Forestine Lewis Barnett, a first grade teacher of Norris Elementary School. On Mrs. Barnett's announCement of her retirement from the Memphis City School System, the principal, faculty and students began their master plot. First of all, Mrs. Barnett was chosen as "Teacer of the Year" by the faculty,. On this occasion the student body saluted her with a surprise assembly program. The PTA presented her a leather lounge chair. Later Mrs. Barnett was honored again by her school family, with a banquet at Tim McCarver's restaurant. The honoree, accompanied by her husband. Homer Barnett of Knoxville, sat beneath a wall size portrait of herself done by Brenda Smith a BTW student under the guidance of Mrs. Roy Milton. Mrs. Barnett was showered with gifts by relative and friends. The Norris family presented the vivacious honoree with a 14 kt. gold charm bracelet and charm. MRS.
