There also were those who took issue in such a discussion as when a lynching is not a lynching. In spite of all this the little Till boy had died an inglorius death and was just as dead as from any cause. The trial of the accused persons for this ugly crime and their subsequent release brought down many criticisms of the conduct and final outcome of the trial. Some went so far as to allow that the law was lynched. In the face of glaring evidence in which the ring Till wore with his late father's initial theron, and his own mother's firm identity of her son, the verdict brought in showed the doubt of the jury in being convinced that the long chain of circumstantial evidence did not place Bryant and Milan on the scene of the murder nor as the ones who conspired and murdered young Till,, notwithstanding the fact that they were the last ones seen with him alive and their own admission that they took him from the farmhouse on that ill fated night in Mississippi. In the old days lynching took on those horrid scenes of ancient human hangings in which the young men turned out with their elders to get at first sight a picture of the early pattern of reprisal that was initiated for the terror of the freed men. In that the lynched victim was allowed to hang to his tree, shot full of holes for that inerasible lesson to his coming generations. The patent Verdicts ran: "This person came to his death at the hand or hands of a person or persons unknown to this jury." That was the usual end which closed the chapter of the murder. Then lynching as such became a running sore to the chagrin and embarrassment of the community involved. With appeal after appeal for the federal government to take jurisdiction in lynching cases, there was seen a tendency of carrying it on in more of a private manner. In that we saw in the case of Mallard, that victim who met his death at Lyons Georgia while riding with his wife in a new automobile and those two couples lynched by "private parties" near Monroe a more appropriate form of murder which might not technically qualify as lynchings. We come to the Emmett Till case, still current in Mississippi, which was enacted so skillfully as to bring on a press dispute as to whether it were really o lynching! When such a temperment in its contagion fixes its eyes on the temple of justice itself, there is no wonder in a case of outright wilful murder, a jury would in the face of open guilt, recommend mercy in order to detour the culprit from the supreme penalty when a racial question is involved. Those who have fought on this battle front in a challenge of the lynch spirit and its practice should take notice of these new forms in which the lynchings occur. To meet this issue federal laws must be passed to give federal jurisdiction over racial crimes. Dr. Brown — Logical Choice Rumors persist that Dr. Aaron Brown will again serve his adopted state in the field of education. It is said that the powers that be plan to make him executive secretary of the Georgia Teachers and Education Association, a position made vacant by the death of Mr. Harper earlier this year. Dr. Brown is the logical choice for this position. As a member of the Executive Board and as Editor of the Herald he knows the inner-most workings of this powerful association. As an educator who has come through the ranks, as a classroom teacher, as a school principal, as a college dean and as a college president, he is well acquainted with the problems of educators on every level. He served education in Georgia for twenty-three years. These qualifications alone would make him a logical choice but we believe he possesses other qualities that label him as the best possible candidate for the position. Dr. Brown is first, last and always a man, in the fullest meaning of the word. It has been our pleasure to observe him for ten years while he was president of Albany State College. He was never too big or too little to come to see you about anything. He always recognized the worth of man in any walk of life. In his lofty position he kept the common touch so easily lost by little men as soon as they get in office. Dr. Brown is a man of conviction. He will rise or fall standing by these convictions. He believes in his race and the advancement of the Negro to full participation in community life. It was this stand that cost him his position at Albany State College. In face of unsurmountable opposition he held to these convictions and came out with a better position than the one he was holding at the time. It is not known whether Dr. Brown would accept the Executive Secretary position if offered. It is known that the state could not find a better person. We believe the late Mr. Harper would look down on Georgia approvingly should this choice be made. The SOUTHWEST GEORGIAN urged a "Draft Dr. Brown" movement to bring this great personality back to the state, first because we need his services and secondly to prove to the rest of the nation that justice will triumph over injustice in the long run. REVIEWING THE NEWS By WILLIAM GORDON Managing Editor, Atlanta Daily World "One of the biggest jobs," a Southern newspaper editorial writer once said, "is sorting out letters from "crackpots." Most of them are racists in theme attacking almost everything from Catholicism to the kind of automobiles Negroes, should be allowed to drive. "We sort them out, separating the chaff from the wheat," the writer said, and publish those with the least emotional content. But some, the writer pointed out, are persistent; they continue with telephone calls and even threats to get over their point of view. In some instances, editors have been forced into suppressing information, playing up news stories to the satisfaction of theracists, the bigot and the die-hard who profess that their way of life is still the popular view. But the influence of the bigot on editors, television and movie people, hasn't been altogether regional. Northern magazine and newspaper editors have long labored under the fear that a few letters from the South protesting the appearance of Negroes on TV shows in the movies and in newspaper and magazine columns would hurt their business. But thanks to what television has done. It has been proven that letters from the racists mean absolutely nothing. Many of them who threaten to drop subscriptions are in such a minority that big publications wouldn't miss them anyway. The theory that the South is so steeped in prejudice and hatred of the Negro that, it resents seeing him on television, in the movies or written up in top magazines is an insult to many who live here. Prejudice cannot be measured in terms of geography. One book publisher reports that treatment of Negro life from a serious point of view sells better in the South than in the North. Another factor is that Negroes themselves make up a great market in the South. Magazines, television and movies get their support from a compact market, otherwise they could not exist in a competitive social order. It would be stupid to overlook the Negro. The big factor of course rests With the youngsters, those who see Negroes in a different light, more as a human being than a sterotype. Such a factor can be capitalized on by enlightened leadership, in business, social and political life. The story of a North Carolina mayor is significant here. "It didn't take the Supreme Court decision to start us on the right tract'' he said. "When we opened certain facilities to Negroes, we faced the crackpots, the die-hards who threatened to withdraw their support. But we stood our ground." Now, the mayor said, ho friction exists, those who raised a fuss have been able to see how ridiculous they looked. And this part of the South is allowed to move forward with the rest of the world. And it is becoming more apparent everywhere. There are more black faces on television, in the movies, in the magazines and newspapers — the same faces mind you, who worked on assembly lines during the war, fought and died in the trenches in Europe and Asia, faces that represent blood and sweat, torture and death. They possess the same basic substance of all other members of the human family. Biologically, they happen to be of a different color. We may as well get use to seeing these faces of ebony, brown, yellow and otherwise, for there are millions more to come. BETWEEN THE LINES The serious illness of President Eisenhower is a matter of grave concern for the United States in particular and the world in general. This great nation will watch intently and prayerfully that our great President may soon recover and be fully restored to the nation and the world to help in the serious matter of finding a way to peace-in our times. The President's illness is superpolitical and interest in his illness and its outcome must not be bounded by political considerations. The writer is unequivocally committed to the democratic program and platform, but he is big enough to acknowledge that Eisenhower has made a great President, and has striven hard to be President of all the people, those who voted for him and those who did not. In other words, Eisenhower has shown himself to be a personality of great moral breadth. However non-partisan may be our interest in his complete recovery, the truth remains he is out as a candidate for a second term, however reluctant the republicans may be to give him up. The presidency of these United States is no place for a man with so serious an ailment as coronary thrombosis. The mental and moral erosion of the office precludes persons of invalid possibilities. It would be a species of cruelty to force him to make another race for the presidency. He easily could be of greater value to the nation and world in the capacity of world advisor on grave matters of state. Although Eisenhower has not gone all out for full integration, he has cast his mighty influence on the side of a wider and fuller recognition of the Negro as a citizen of the United States in conformity with the tradition of the immortal Roosevelt and the deuobtable Truman. Although Truman could not measure arms with Roosevelt, he nevertheless was a hard-hitter for civil rights and set an illustrious example which Eisenhower has followed in a most commendable manner. The fact that Eisenhower flaunted defiance in the face of the Old South and stood up to be counted on the side of true democracy, much to the dismay of the Old South that helped to elect him as a protest against civil rights, is the fittest testimonial to the calibre of the man and this too is one of the reasons Negroes among others should possess a peculiar sympathy for the President, in the current crisis. If it is true there has been no civil rights legislation since Eisenhower's occupancy of the White the blame must not be placed at the door of the President but should be made a responsibility of those reactionary Southern Congressmen abetted by the deceitful Northerners who blow hot and cold on the color question at one and the same time. The greater blame lies with the latter. Inspite of the subtle attempt to scuttle the New Deal program on the one hand and to copy it on the other, the country is experiencing one of its greatest eras of prosperity. Of course the blue print was laid down by the 16-year rule of the democrats and the lines were well marked out for the republicans to follow and the fact that they had the courage to follow faithfully a great blue print to their credit and their greatest claim to a continuation in power hinges about the fact that they knew a good program when they saw one. Then too, within recent weeks Eisenhower has "talked turkey" to Russia. Too long our statesmen sought the role of bullies in their dealing with Russia. There was the subtle attempt it seemed to scare Russia into a course of action. Eisenhower was willing to try a more excellent way. He was willing to acknowledge it seems that Russia has become a world power like ourselves and no amount of bulyyism can unmake the fact that communism in Russia is a going concern to the extent that it is bidding for world domination. The fact remains since President Eisenhower has taken matter in his hand, the cold war has grown colder, and on the distant horizon may be seen dim outlines of a peace the world is praying for. At heart we do not want war at heart, Russia does not either, and therein lies the hope that all the nations may see, before it is too late, the folly and futility of World War III! Know Your Library BY MAUDDEAN SEWARD No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main." — John Donne. No matter how ruined man and his world may seem to be, and no matter how terrible man's despair may become, as long as he continues to be a MAN his very humanity continues to tell him that if has a meaning . . . Our life, as individual persons and as members of a perplexed and struggling race, provokes us with the evidence that it must have meaning and live according to it. We, therefore, have something for which to live . . . What every man looks for in life is his own salvation and the salvation of the men with whom he lives . . . "If any man would save his life, he must lose it," and "Love one another as I loved you" . . . "We are all members one of another." . . . Only when we see ourselves in our true human context, as members of a race which is intended to be one organism and "one body," will we begin to understand the positive importance not only of the successes but of the failures and accidents in our lives. My successes are not my own. The way to them was prepared by others. The fruit of my labors is not my own for I am preparing the way for the achievements of another. Nor are my failures my own. They may spring from the failure of another, but they are also compensated for by another's achievement. Therefore the meaning of my life is not to be looked for merely in the sum total, of my own achievements. It is seen only in the complete integration of the achievements and failures of my own generation and society and time. It is seen, above all, in my integration in the mystery of Christ. . . . . Solitude, humility, self-denial, action and contemplation, the sagarments, the monastic life, the family, war and peace none of these makes sense excent in relation to the central reality which is God's love living and acting in those whom He has incorporated in His Christ Nothing at all makes sense; unless we admit with John Donne, that "No man is an island, entire of itself, every man is a piece of the continent a part of the main." If you have not been, able to face and accent your own limitations: if you have been secretly adoring yourselves tortured by apparent de filement; if you have been failing to live for others, go by the Vance Avenue Branch of the Cossitt Library today and get your copy of NO MAN IS AN ISLAND by Thomas Merton and you will find that all of us are not weak in the same spots, but we can supplement and complete one another, each one making up in himself for the lack in another. NO MAN IS AN ISLAND. New Plan for Film Program American Newsreel, long time favorite in the nation's leading theatres, has inaugurated a new plan of distribution of the weekly newsfilms to all Negro Universities and colleges thru out the country. E. M. Gluckman, producer of the American Newsreel for more than 15 years, has decided to release the film, every week, to all educational institutions, free. He feels that, in this way, students, faculty and young people will be kept up to date on current events, and that in no other way would this be practical or possible. Playdates for the motion picture newsreel series are being arranged now and the films will actually start their nationwide circuit of colleges about Oct. 15. Plans are in the making to continue the releases during the summer months as well as during the regular educational term. Hits Plan To Close Schools Editor Jonathan Daniels said Friday that those who would solve the South's segregation question by abandoning public schools are advocating a new kind of secession— "secession, from civilization." The Raleigh News and Observer Editor speaking at Coker College, said nothing make school segregation problem simple, but it is made more serious by "those who step promptly, confidently, angrily forward with ruthless remedies." He added: "And the most tragic proposal ever made in a presumably intelligent land is that the South solve this great public problem by putting an end to public education—indeed to all education so far, as the overwhelming majority of the people are concerned." Civil Service Body "efficiency" and Cole, replied that it was not. He stated that Cole then told the group, interceding in Horne's behalf, that Home was "qualified in all respects except one." When he asked what that was, Cole is reported as saying, "Let's not be naive." The administrator continued, "I don't have to draw a picture, do I? It's politics." Civil Service Mrs. Mildred L. Indian Official To Advise Gold Coast Govern't Sir Frederick Bourne, formerly governor of the Central Provinces in India and of East Bengal in Pakistan, will arrive in the Gold Coast next week to advise the government of the British colony on constitutional problems. Bourne will arrive by air at the request of the Gold Coast government to advise the government and political parties on certain constitutional matters connected with transfer of power to the regions. The government decided to invite Bourne after it voted to establish regional councils. His main task will be to outline the duties of the regional councils and to examine the entire question of federal system of government for the Gold Coast. BLAIR T. HUNT, PASTOR MISSISSIPPI BLVD. CHRISTIAN CHURCH, MEMPHIS TEXT: "And he said unto him, 'Why art thou, being the king's son, lean from day to day?"—II Samuel 13:4. There are skinny people, plump people fat people . . . all sort of people. Some people are very, very lean. We call them skinny. We fear they are underfed. We wonder why are they so lean, so skinny, so bony. In the church we behold professing people of God, the king's sons and daughters, and we wonder like the text, "Why are they so lean?" They are children of King Jesus. They have tasted and seen that the Lord is good. They have great spiritual privileges and opportunities. We wonder, why are they so lean? They are heirs and joint heirs with Jesus Christ. Their spiritual Father is rich. But they look so lean and hungry. They act so lean and hungry. They have no joy, no gladness of heart. They seemingly don't know that within their souls there is a well of water springing up with life eternal. They forget that God has prepared for them a banquet table. They are spiritually undernourished. They are lean. When we cease to love . . . love everybody . . . . we become lean. Yes, we have got to love everybody . . . Those people who are funny to us . . . all sorts, and all conditions of people. Let us fatten our souls with love. When we cease to sympathize with our fellow creatures we become spiritually lean. When we cease to give we become lean. We read, "Give and it shall be given unto you." You are lean. Change your diet. Turn to 55th chapter of Isaiah and find there a formula, "Ho, every one thatthirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money, come ye, buy and eat: yes come, buy wine and milk without money and without price . . . wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? Hearke diligently unto me, and eat tha which is good, and let your sou delight in fatness." Let us eat of the heavenly man na . . . leave our leanness . . . take on Jesus Christ and grow fat in the Lord. Some professed Christians are like the housewife whose pantry is filled with food, but Who is starving to death. There are spiritual blessings in God's great pantry . . . God's provisions are adequate and sufficient to meet our demands. Let our soul delight themselves in the fatness thereof. "Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good." White, superintendent of public schools here, told the Dallas PTA Council that the problems of integration can be met only by sane, sober thinking and united action oil the part of all concerned. Speaking at a meeting of -the council in the Leach Memorial auditorium of the Washington Technical high school. Dr. White discussed the magnitude of the problems and tasks that confront persons 'who are part of an enterprise that shapes the educational philosophies and habits of more than 100,000 children." He pointed out that two classrooms of babies are born in Dallas every day and just providing housing and equipment to care for all these children is a problem within itself. Dr. White said that he could not give a definite program for the integration of schools, but, he added, he is working with the board of education that is working under the law. He said the Dallas Board of Education will continue to follow the law because it cannot afford to gamble with the $10,000,000 provided by state funds when the education of so many children is involved. Dr. White reviewed a program, published in all local papers and sent to all interested organizations and advised that the PTA councils of both races appoint committees to study the problems involved in integration. When these problems are identified, he said, joint committee should be appointed to study them and work out possible solutions for them. The report of the combine study should be submitted to the board for consideration and review. The superintendent stressed th gfact that the reports must be objective they must be completely honest. TO SAVE CRANES The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has joined forces with Canada in protesting an Air Force plan to operate a bombing range near the Texas wintering grounds of the almost extinct whooping cranes.
