SUBSCRIPTION RATES Year $5.00—6 Months $3.00—3 Months $1.50 (In Advance) Mrs. Bethune's Wise Words Walter White, executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, has sent out an appeal to one thousand Americans to subscribe $100 or more to assure the necessary funds for the follow-up work required to implement the recent United States Supreme Court decisions banning segregation in dining cars and in schools of higher education in the South. "The victory in these cases," Mr. White said "cost the NAACP $50,000. To implement these decisions may mean the filing of hundreds of additional suits costing thousands of dollars." In her response to the NAACP's appeal, Mrs. Bethune sent her contribution of $100 and said: "Every truly democratic American should do without butter on his bread, if necessary, in order to give $100 or $1, or whatever he is capable of giving so that the follow-up in these cases shall not suffer because of lack of funds." The magnificence of Mrs. Bethune's statement is another reason why her influence reaches so far and to sa many groups. Throughout her long and useful life a golden chain of service has been the keynote emphasis. Thus, when) she speaks not only do the women of America listen but all races and sexes hear and heed. We applaud the good judgment and advice of Mrs. Bethune and add our own word of urgency to the appeal in the hope that all citizens will aid the cause when it is properly presented. A large number of Negroes are already aware of the fact that these suits were engineered, financed and argued by NAACP lawyers. But there are still a surprising number of our people who do not know that these civil rights cases, all of them, have been due directly to the work of the N. A. A. C. P. We should never forget facts like these and should, for these reasons, never fail to make a substantial contribution to the NAACP. Almost every advance of the Negro in local communities is the result of a long and arduous fight by the NAACP. MART OF THOUGHT One second of irretrievable time is short indeed, but, each one has its effect upon the universe as dies a tiny grain of sand. Atone they count for naught but united, the grains of sand forms a beach to hold the mighty ocean. Seconds, when added, equal the sum if our lives. The life span of one hundred year. begins with-one second Little things are extremely important so if you would succeed in life, you must look well to the little things. It is said that there is & barn on the Allegheny mountains, so built that the water which Lib, upon it seperates in such a manner so that which falls on one side runs into a stream which flows in the Allegheny River from thence into the Ohio, into the Mississippi and on into the Gulf of Mexico. And the water which falls on the other side of the barn flows into the Susquehanns, into the Chesapeake Bay and on to the Atlantic Ocean Now the point where the water divides is very small; the peak in the roof of a barn but oh. how different the courses of the water. So it is with people, young and old, A very small thing can change the whole channel of our lives. Much depends upon the kind of temper; we have, because if we are cross and crabbed "no one will love us but if we are kind and cheerful and always wear a smile we shall have friends whereever we go. Never think yourself. whoever you are of small importance. Never think it is of little account whether you are good or bad or what your examples are to others. Each men particle of dust, the minutest atom and all little people are active agent in the universe. We are all important in our own sphere no matter how isolated or insignificant that speare may appear to be. A few particles of dust in a watch will stop its motion; small barnacles at a ship's botton will hinder its Journey and a few grains of sand shifted in the great river will change its current. So-little folk have their influence upon the world for weal or woe. Leaders are necessary, very much so No one will deny that. A perfect example of indespensable leadership is our recent war against totalitarianism. The great generals were magnificent in mapping out their strategy but what would they, with all their stars, regalia and brilliance have been, without the little soldiers. who were individuals-working as a team, steadily moving towards victory? If you would really succeed in lige, you must look to the little things. DROP by DROP, the water trickles on the rocks that needless lie Yet these rocks show the POWER' of these drippings bye and bye. Emerson. Let us take one more glance at the recent Supreme Court decisions Most of us correctly view them as being significant and as giving us courage and hope. As has been previously written in these columns, those decisions are fine and are quite necessary. However, they are by no means sufficient. In this connection let as consider this statement by Emerson: "It is only on reality that any strength of action can be based." That is true in general and is certainly true ofthe recent decisions in particular. Let us illustrate this statement. A man or group of people are really strong, resourceful and brave do not require a law to command respect. Those qualities insure and guarantee respect and proper consideration. Not only do these attributes guarantee consideration, but they also impel others to cheerfully, accord all credit due. Moreover, virtue makes the owner thereof strong enough to take care of himself and to work out his own salvation. Moses may have meant that when he charged the children of Isreal "Keep therefore the words of this co venant, and do them, that ye may prosper in all that you do." All rising groups, peoples and nations follow that pattern, Naturally we are not any exception to this rule. in other words we are saying that this action will have no power for us unless it Is based on the reality of our worthiness. That is to say that we—and we alone—can do that— the Supreme Court decisions notwithstanding. Another fact that we should consider thoughtfully is our tendency to aspire toward results rather than to the causes which effect those results. By way of example: We axe more concerned about college "credicks" than we are about the development from the courses concerned. We like well ordered communities and do not care about pmneering and building new ones out of nothing. We like radios and television sets. but never of manufacturing them We beast of our cadillacs, but. are not concerned whether or not we ever make one. We copy like monkeys and do not originate much. That is bad enough, but it goes further than that. We do not sem to care, that is indeed tragic and disheartening. All right carry with them certain obligations and furthermore, they must be met. There is no escape from this. Likewise, the rights to. ward which we aspire carry certain responsibilities. If you desire first class citizenship, you must first be a first class citizen yourself. If you want integration, you must be such that you are acceptable. More specifically, if you want to be able to ride anywhere on a bus here in the South you must conduct yourself as a whole far differently from what you are now doing. As a matter-of-fact I am very fearful of what may soon take place on these busses. This situation is dangerous. Our minsters should do something about it. Just as aristocracy and fashion are inevitable results of certain basic and fundamental attributes, so are the things for which we strive. The emphasis is at present on the wrong thing, and should be placed upon self-improvement, the prerequisite of what we want, in short to get the rose you must first break up and prepare the soil. Then the seed must be planted, Then the ground hag to be worked periodically. And finally, after the nurture of the plant, the beautiful flower is obtained. So it must be with us also.
