Beauchamp Clowns Here Sunday The Indianapolis Clowns, ion, time, member of the Negro American League, will bring professional baseball to Memphis again Sunday May 9 in a game against another traveling team, the New York Stars, at the No. 3 diamond of the Fairgrounds Park. Several major league stars at one time or another in their early days played with the famous I dianapolis Clowns, including Hank Aaron of Milwaukee, who started out with the Clowns; Choo Choo" Coleman, George Smith and John Wyatt, The team is constantly on the look-out for new talent, as the major league scouts are always following this all-Negro team in search of tomorrow's big league stars. In addition to playing a good brand of baseball, the Clowns present a comedy show that keeps the fans reeling in their seats, and at the same time does not distract from the game. Everywhere the Clowns have played large crowds have greeted them, not only for the baseball, but also for the sideline antics of many of the players. Fans are talking about the big Units some major league catchers. use to catch cartain pitchers and pitches, yet, old time fans remember the great Goose Tatum and his oversize first base mitt, that he used to the delight of the thousands of fans. Anyone who enjoys baseball (and who doesn't) will admit that the national sport owes much of its popularity to its "funnymen." Dizzy Dean, Bo Bolinskey and many other baseball greats have combined humor with athletic ability to make the game more entertaining. But, how about a hitter who bats backwards? or a first baseman who works sitting down? Such antics are typical of the fabulously funny Indianapolis Clowns. These jokers keep an audience howling with their unpredictable shannigans and play a first-class game of baseball at the same time. Poles stress need for world Red unity. EARN EXTRA CASH Come On Fellows Let's Go Sell If You Are 11 or Older Come in or Call Jake Gaither Says Florida Will Use Pro-Type Offense Florida A. and M's head football coach, Jake Gaither, announced this week that he will use the pro-type offense next fall. The Rattlers have traditionally used the split T. "I think the pro-type offence is better for our splits," said the A. and M. coach. "The defenses have hampered our running from the conventional T. We have faced more gap-eight defenses recently than we have in the past, with the speed we have and the type of pass receivers we have, our chances of winning should be better with the pro offence." The Rattlers have just completed 19 days of spring training. '"I can hardly say that I was satisfied with spring training," Coach Gaither commented. "Let's say that I was reasonably satisfied. We spent the time attempting to evaluate new players and put in a few Now plays. We tried the pro offense last season and we liked it." Several Rattlers who played one way last season will have to play both Ways this year. Fullbacks Eugene Thomas. Preston Johnson, arid halfback Rudy Cambridge will have to play defense as well as off effuse. The Rattlers' running game will be spotty. With speed merchants Bob Hayes and Bobby Felts missing several reserves will have an opportunity to show what they have to offer. Halfbacks Major Hazelton, Nat James, Jim Ashcroft, and Eugene Milton, all speed demons, will be used both as flankers and running backs. The foursome missing spring training to run track. Willie Thomas and Sam Anderson will be the other running backs, while Lenny Kelly may be used as a flanker. Ends Art Robinson and John Eason will be placed in flanker positions. Robinson led the Rattlers in pass receptions last year. Eason will be used as a punter with Eddie Cooper and Andrew Greene. Elroy Morand. Willie Powell, Rudy Jamison, and Tony Alexander are thet prospects at quarterback. Morand played second to Ernie Hart last year. Hart graduated and it is likely that Morand will replace him in the No. 1 quarterback spot. Heavy losses from last fall may force the Rattlers to use two units instead of the usual three they have used the past five seasons. Nineteen lettermen including nine from the starting eleven, will not, return in '65. "Freshmen prospects look good," said Voach Gaither. "I feel that we had a successful recruiting year, but I doubt that we will be able to use three units even if they all enroll this fall." The Rattlers had a 9-1 record last season and won the Southern Inter-collegiate Athletic Conference title for the 12th straigth year.
