Beauchamp Some Operations Ago He Was A She The sensational sex transformation of former Austrian world women downhill champion Erika Schinegger drew speptical comments from a well known doctor here Monday. "A complete change of sex is impossible at the present stage of medicine," said Austrian doctor Oswald Schdinger, a reputed sports physician. "Operations and hormone injecttions can help only to a certain extent." Erik Schingger, 19 had captured the 1966 world downhill title in Portillo, chile, when he was still known as Erika, a stronglegged teenage girl, Last Friday he told a startier news conference that he is now officially recognized as a man after extremely different operations performed at Innsburck University Hospital during the last seven months. Passports and other personal documents have been changed to Erik Schinegger, he added. Erik is celebrating his 20th birthday on Wednesday, his first as a man. Schineggar was known as the world's best woman downhiller in the past few years when she won nearly all women downhill events. First reports about in imminent sex control it the 1968 Grenoble Winter Games prompted her with drawal from the Austrain women team cadre late 1967 "for personal reasons." Austrian ski officials later indicated that preliminary Investigations revealed that Erika would have to undergo operations. Profesor Hans Marberger of the Innsbruck University Hospital mean while performed the four "extremely difficult" operations after which Erik declared that he Is now officially regarded as a man. Austrian Eki Federation President Karlheinz Klee said he expects Erik "to go the top in the men's cadre if he should fully recover from the operations and display the same stamina as did Erika. He added, however, "it would have been better for Erik to wait with his announcement about contemplating a new racing career un til he knows his physical abilities as a young man." Erik said he plans to start a new career as a ski racer and bike racer "as soon as I have fully recovered from the operations." World Ski Federation FIS Secretary General Sigge Bergmann of Sweden, who attended the FIS Congress in Innsbruck last Sunday said he does not believe that the FIS would deprive Schinegger of the world downhill title captured as a girl in 1968. "There were no doubts about her sex at that time." Bergmann said. "I don't believe he should dig up that caso now." Klee said "there is no reason why we should not accept Frik in the mens national team next season." Doctor Schwinger commenting on the Schinegger case, did not elaborate on his doubts beyond stating that "to my knowledge a complet change of sex is impossible." Erik, back in his tiny Carithian native village of Agsdorf after the press conference meanwhile has other troubles. "I don't know what to wear." he said "I have a lot of old dressed but hardly any mens wear." He hopes to get them as birthday presents on Wednesday. Another trouble is the possibility of Erik being drafted into the Austrian Army. "Theoretically he would have to be called up for service, a local official said. "But we will try to handle this case as what it is in the first place a human tragedy." "It will have some effect," said J. Martion Crain, president of the Atlanta Real Estate Board. "The main consideration is that they have money. If you get out to the north side of Atlanta, you are talking about very expensive homes. That eliminates the middle class income person right away. "We have some Negro millionaires in Atlanta," added Crain, who also is a vice president of one of the city's more prominent real estate firms. "They could have moved anywhere they wanted to long ago, provided the people who owned property wanted to sell it. "But I don't think there have been many such requests," he added. "We have some very beautiful homes in Negro sections of Atlanta with heated swimmingpools. If they have that much money, they would want to buy In that area or one like it. "I think they want to be happy where they are living. This is something they the press are trying to make sensational But it bolls down to the fact that the home is where they want to be happy. "It will make the difference mainly in the $6,000 and 17.000 income bracket," Crain added. "But we think." there will be very few voluntary requests in Atlanta to move into all white areas." Another real estate broker, who declined use of his name said he felt the "supreme Court decision, standing alone would make no difference in the sales of houses. "As I understand that law the 1866 statute is carries no penalty nor does it hare any enforcing provisions. So how are you going to enforce such a law?" be asked.
