Memphis World Memphis World Publishing Co. 1950-12-05 Lewis O. Swingler Truth May Cause Trouble The search for truth is the greatest activity of human beings but it is often shackled by the tendency of individuals to become wedded to convictions that become dearer than truth itself. Let us assume, fur example, that some citizen makes a great discovery, hitherto unknown to men and women. It is epochal, we assume, and the thinker announces it to the world. One would expect human beings to receive the information with open minds, test it by logic and experience and then embrace it with enthusiasm. Unfortunately, that is not the way of the world. Here is what would be likely to happen: Some people would think that it might interfere with their business profits. They would denounce the discoverer as a Communist, immediately. Others would see in the enunciated principle some challenge to their established positions in economics, sociology, religion, or other fields. They would pounce upon the thinker with all the glee of a dog chasing a rabbit. So the process would go for decades before the truth would find itself welcome on the globe. Readers may 'think this is far-fetched. They should read what happened in earlier ages to the great men who attempted to lead the minds of men along new paths of truth, in the field of science or religion. They should remember that human nature has not changed very much in the ages since man began to walk the earth. Now there is nothing to be gained by denouncing human beings for being foolish. All that any individual can do, for himself or herself, is to resolve to be open-minded, to eagerly await the revelations that arc yet to come and to stand ready, upon proper occasion, to discard the fondled half-truth for the truth that is eventually destined to make men free. DON'T LET DEATH TAKE YOUR HOLIDAY "Don't Let Death take YOUR Holiday! George E. Miller, President of the Tennesee Safety Council, today issued this warning to the motoring and walking public as a part of the Council's December traffic safety educational program 'which is being sponsored by the Tennessee Junior Chamber of Com merce and 56 local Jaycee chapters over the State. "The natural bad weather hazzards of December and the holiday rush combine to make this month more dangerous than another in the year," Mr. Miller who serves as Director of Public Safely for the city of Oak Ridge, explained today. Contributing in no small part to this brand of annual highway murder' Mr. Miller said "is, he havoc caused by the drinking driver! In 1949, for instance, the National Safety Council estimates that about 5.000 fatal traffic accidents in the nation involved a drive who had been drinking!" "The fact that drinking impairs driving skill to a dangerous degree, the Council President stated "has, of course, been long known A recent study of this subject in Sweden, for example," substantiatesour suspicions that the consump tion of three of four bottles of beer will lessen the driving skill of an expert driver by about 25 to 30 per cent. And we don't have to go to Sweden to find those same results!' The best policy for insuring an enjoyable, safe holiday season the Council President said, is by driv ing with one thought firmly in mind: that the man who has been, drinking lowers his chances of survival to ridiculous odds the moment he takes a steering wheel in hand. Mr. Miller urged all citizens of Tennessee to cooperate with the Jaycees and the Tennessee Safety Council in an all-out effort to make the roads and streets safer during December and the holiday season. He urged all public officials and law enforcement officers to strive for better enforcement of traffic laws for the safety of all those who must drive or walk. I SAW HATE In this curious raid of ours with so many of us confused with the newspapers, radios, commentators, magazines and propaganda being disseminated by the various pressure groups, attempting to mold public opinion and confuse the issues, so many lose sight of the fact that the only ISM that counts is . The Negro problem has been exploited in the good old USA by many, many people, particularly politicians, and in many instances individuals, who, in trying to win favor with the coloredd people, claim to be their friends, and yet, when not in their presence, talk out of the side of their mouths, in an entirely different strain. As an individual, living here in the good ole South, in Tennessee, for many long years. I have always felt that I have Reclaimed myself to the southern viewpoint, that in every respect the Negro is justly entitled to the Freedom of speech. Freedom of Religious, and Freedom of OPPORTUNITY, and let it go at that without stressing too much, a collateral issue as to the right or wrong of segregation, feeling that perhaps the Negro, in the selpride of his own race, would in most instances prefer to be left alone and to prefer the association of his own people, when coming to social matters rather than be thrust in the presence of those who may have any anti social ideas on the subject, and thusly, in the South, not to make too much of an issue of same. However, it had never dawned upon me, that with the variance in degree, of the attitudes of different persons that there would be one who were pathologically or mentally sick to the point, that they _would have a degree of hated as to almost amount to a phobia. In the last several days, I have had the fortunate or unfortunate experience to have been drawn into a political argument with a man, who has spoken so forcefully and with such extreme terms so far as the colored race is concerned, that I though it might be enlightening to bring this to the fore, so that those intelligent members of your people, might understand that such sick mentally people, (who are not classified legally as crazy but merely eccentric or opinionated), have to be dealt with in some reasonable manner to offset the prejudicial and damaging statements that they may be spreading. This man, in substance, in his warped views, stated that the ultimate purpose of the NAACP and other similar Negro organizations was, eo create sexual relationships between the colored and the white people, so is to break down the bars of the races, and that all other matters were merely collateral and leading up to same. That all of the various magazines such as , and others, were actting as disseminating agents in the encouraging of this doctrine. He lauded Westbrook Pegler to the skies, and fused the most fifthy language so far as Cleaner Rookvelt was concerned, stating that she was the principal exponent of this doctrine, publicly being seen and embracing some of your people, and that he would devote a great deal of his time and money, printing pamphlets against these periodicals and others, encouraging segregation. In my own simple way, I told him that it was my opinion that Mrs. Roosevelt was one of the greatest women that America had ever produced, and that, in her outstanding position on the United Nations, that she spoke for the women of America, and her statements and actions, of her liberal attitude, were reflected to the other nations in the U. N., and helped in the democratic attitude of the other many nations of the earth, taking into consideration that the colored population of the world is approximately 60 per cent or better, and that if we were ever to have a global war, or a war with Russia, that good will would be of a limitless value to us in gaining their assistance. I further attempted to bring out the fact that with the tremendous colored population that exists in America today, her actions and thoughts, exclusively of being her own personal views, also affected the feelings of the colored people in America in knowing that their brother Americans of the white race have a respectful and tolerant attitude towards them, in all matters. We all know that there are people here in this country, some of them represent foreign interests, that would take the poor and unfortunate, and those who are in the lower groups of your economic scale, and try to exploit their feelings and thoughts by making derogatory remarks about the treatment of the Negro in this country to draw them into their own cause. This is the same plan that is be. ing used all over the world by Russia and her agents in China, France, and many other countries to gair. members to Join their ranks, and deluce these simple people, into believing that it is to the race's best interests, to destroy all that our people fought so hard for to create the ideals and principles. How unfortunate, therefore, that bigots and crackpots, in their raging deluded outbursts, serve the very interests that they decry, when they wilfully go out and create disharmony and hatred amongst all of our people. This message is written in the sincere hope that when any of the colored people are approached by questionable characters and the seeds of dissension may be attempted to be sprouted amongst them, that they have the courage and intelligence to tell their pastor, or report the matter to the FB1 or tell their local newspaper about same, so that they may be discovered and the proper measures taken to eliminate these destructive acts. The record of the leading members of your race, in war or peace, speaks for itself. Any man who would spread anti-race propaganda, whether against the colored or the white, does a disservice to his country and is not truly at heart a good American. Men of the character such as Westbrook Pegler and others like vulture eating on curios, have been harping day after day on the great and honored former president, Franklin D. Roosevelt (who has done more to advanvce the spirit of liberalism to the colored people than any man except Abraham Lincoln), and has been attacking him and everything that he has built up, knowing in his perverted mind, that the dead cannot answer the many charges and outrageous statements that he has issued, to sully his name. Only a mental coward, who would wish to flaunt his papers, for the sake of sensationalism and getting large sums for his posionous outpoudings, would have the termerity to take such steps. Let, your people take courage and answer to the newspapers and magazine pouring out such filth, and vocally decry and protest at the defiling of this man's good name and his family. I sincerely hope that the colored people will take heart and disregard the actions of a few cranks and earnestly feel, that by and large, the masses of the people, in the South as well as the rest of the country, feel for the betterment of the colored race, and wish to do all that can be done to advance their sanding in their communities and as a people as an individual, wherever they may be, and amity amongst the various groups and minorities. Perhaps some expression of your people, either an answer to this article and to the other media of publications would be a good thing, and of constructive value. P. S. I forgot to mention when I get through he called me a communist and I laughed at him With best wishes, I am Very truly yours, Abe Roberts 402 M and M Building Memphis, Tenn. Lawson, head of the Ethiopian World Federation in New York and of a church congregation there, touched off a freak pandemonium in Jamaica's Duke Street Progressive Hall last week, when he told a backward bearded cult of "Rastafarians" that Ethiopia's "Emperor Haile Selassie is not God." Mr. Lawson, who is styled "bishop", is visiting in Jamaica to explain Ethiopia's needs for craftsmen. "Rastafarians' who squatted in shacks and slums on Kingston's Marcus Garvey avenue, turned out in large numbers. The cult, similar to New York's Bums, does not work. They wear long unbarbered and flowing unshaved beards. Members of the cult subject Bishop Lawson to a rapid fire questions among them, "Is Haile Selassie, emperor of Ethiopia and conquering lion of Judah, God?" "No", replied the pastor. "The emperor himself prays to Almighty God, three times daily." Vainly, the Bishop appealed for quietude. The brethren became boisterous. Later when semblance of order was restored, an attempt was made to examine some of the prospective immigrants. But the cult was still indignant at the reproach of their "faith." So the meeting was brought to an abrupt end.
