The elevation of the Tennessee
A & I State College to a university
status culminates eight years of
sensational progress, which began
in 1943 when Dr. Davis became
President of the institution.
The value of the physical plant
has increased from $3,500,000 to
$10,000,000 ($1,300,000 Health and
Physical Education building now
tinder const suet inn included).
The biennial (2 year) budget has
increased from $440,000 to $5,000,
000 ($1,600,000 recent increase for
university status included).
The faculty has increased from
32 members to 235 members. This
number includes many Ph D's and
authorities.
The enrollment has increased
from 660 to 2,000. Even though a
majority of the students are Tennesseons 
other come from almost
every state in the country, as well
as from foreign lands.
When asked discuss the philosophy 
bark of his program, Dr.
Davis said, "During my eight years
if tenure as President of this institution, 
if, hap been my aim to
help Tennessee offer A-class edu
cation 
to all its citizens and, there
by, improve the total civilization of
the state and nation. To that end,
we have always striven, and shall
continue to strive, to develop the
seven traditional areas of instruction 
of this institution to university 
status; thereby, offering to our
students educational opportunities
within our sphere of instruction
equal to those found in the better
universities of this country.
