Memphis World Memphis World Publishing Co. 1967-05-13 J. A. Beauchamp MARRIAGE INVENTORY KEEPS UNION SOUND There is no, such thing as sexual incompatibility. So-called incompatibility is merely the reflection of the many underlying conflicts between a couple that have nothing to do with the bed. A couple that is happy can make a go of sex; But the happily married couple today seems an oddity. These are the views of Dr. George A. Macer, Pasadena obstetriciangynecologist, who over the past 12 years has been devoting more and more time to marriage counselling as patients increasingly turn to him for advice and guidance about marriage. Dr. Macer told colleagues attending a recent meeting of the California Medical Association here that a majority of couples can solve their own problems if they are given a tool by which to evaluate their marriage. The tool he recommends is What he calls a marriage inventory. The inventory, he believes, should be made at regular intervals, and the "rougher and more frequent the maritall squalls, the more frequent should be the inventory, the appraisal of all areas that affect the union." Here are some of the elements to be examined in the inventory: Personalities. Assess each other. No matter how trivial a complaint may seem get it out in the open. The small irritations, Dr. Macer observes, are the ones that break up marriages. Finances "A marriage based on a hand-to-mouth existence has a difficult time enduring, according to the physician. He tries to help his patients see that solid financial planning is essential. Dr. Macer believes that it is well-night impossible for a mother with young children to work full time, run her household fall time, and still have time and energy to be a tender wife. Financial planning is one key to marital harmony, he tries to help his patients understand. Friends, friends should be chosen carefully, since habits, social desires, and behavior patterns are contagious. The physician warns against being too intimate with unhappily married couples and listening to marital woes. He notes that there is a tendency to analyze one's own marriage in terms of the other couple's problems. Religion. Families need a common faith to live by, the doctor maintains, especially in the trials and misfortunes of later life. Such faith can bring people together, cementing their relationship in times of stress, be delieves. In-laws, it should be made clear to both sets of parents at the outset of marriage that a new family unit is being formed and that he and advice are acceptable only when asked for. Sex. The early sexual relationship can be disappointing to a woman if she doesn't understand that enjoyment of sex must be learned. The couple must realize that a man's sexual needs and a woman's are different. They should talk frankly about their sexual problems should these arise, and do so early before deep trouble arises. Usually these troubles can be overcome with patence, understanding and love. These areas of marriage should be reviewed frequently enough so that marital crises don't build up. The doctor tells his patients that there are two distinct danger periods during a marriage. The first comes around the fifth to seventh years, when the wife is busy with the children, may put on weight, neglect her feminine charm, and forget her husband. The second danger period, some time around the twentieth year, comes after, the children are grown and family responsibilities are fewer. The couple, may be less willing to tolerate the minor irritations, which have built up during the years. These danger periods can be avoided, especially if the wife is aware of the pitfalls, keeps up her appearance and interest in her husband, and remembers that the man can't play second fiddle. Sunday School Lesson The central truth contained in today's Lesson is the challenge to identify ourselves with God's purpose for the world, and with. His Power, so that we can be the instruments of his will. Peter and John, along with the other. Asties, were — in a sense — missionaries to the unsaved of their day and time. Imbued with the Holy Spirit, they preached the Gospel to all and sundry, and gained, prestige in the eyes of the people who had witnessed the miracles performed upon the sick, in Christ's name. The high regard in which the Apostles were held, sat ill with the opponents of Christ and His followers, for they feared for their own personal interests should this new movement grow in acceptance among the people they ruled. They therefore plotted to do away with Peter and John, and to put an end to this threat to their personal security. But among them was one, Gama liel, who was also held in high esteem for his wisdom and foresight. To the Sanhedrin Gamaliel issued a warning against that body doing harm to the person of Christ's emissaries. He pointed out that throughout history, those who had opposed God's purposes came to grief themselves, rather than these who were the target for their plotting. He went on to warn the priests that — should they persist in their plans against Peter and John, then they ran the risk of they, themselves perishing! In essence, what Gamaliel was saying was: If a cause which claimed to be of God truly represent Hill, then nothing could forestall it. If however, it turned out to be man-inspired, then it would be overthrown, of its own accord. However, should the former be the case, then they — the Sanhedrin — would be in danger of perishing, by virtue of the fact they were setting themselves against God's will. For — as has been proved throughout the ages — truth and righteousness will not be denied. They may be masked to all outward appearances, for a certain length of time, but they will, in the end, emerge triumphant. Prayer, earnest and from the heart, united with trust, are the Christian's weapons against evil and any adversities that threaten this spirit. And while it is right that we morla's pray for deliverance from temptation, for the health and wellbeing of our loved ones and for the souls of all mankind, we must never lose sight of prayer's wider concepts. The highest degree of prayer known to man is that which is motivated by the desire that God will act to bring about that which will promote. His Kingdom, thereby, assuring mankind of the immortality of the soul that was promised many thousands of years ago, at the beginning of the Creation. The attainment of such a state of grace has been what inspired the early Christians to defy their enemies, to suffer, and even to die for such a cause. It has led the early Christian church out of secret meeting places to an accepted place in the lives of every country in the world of any consequence today. It will — by the grace of God, and by devoted and inspired believers — lead to the overthrowing of the darkness that clouds the few countries left in the world that need to hear God's message. And so, another step will have been taken towards perpetrating God's plan for mankind. Dispute On Guidelines Slows Desegregation, Group Charges Administration efforts and time used to defend the controversial school desegregation guidelines has hindered progress toward equal educational opportunity, according to a statement released by a national civil rights federation. The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights, a coalition of civil rights groups, presented their suggestions and recommendations on how to speed school desegregation to John W. Gantaer, Sec retary, Of Health, Education and Welfare, last month and released them to the press on April 29. Roy Wilkins, executive director of the National Association for the Advancement for Colored People and chairman of the Leadership Conference, declared that the present guidelines are not strong enough. "Negro parents and students have been intimidated, harassed and beaten in their attempts to enter schools now available to them under law." Mr. Wilkins said. "In the North, such subtle methods as site selection urban redevelopment, and school districting have been used to consign Negro students to ghetto schools and prevent meaningful desegregation." He said that Southern members of Congress and Southern state and school officials has misled the public into believing the guidelines are too stringent. The Leadership Conference statement said in part: "We feel that the necessity of providings a united front in defense of the guidelines over a period of the last six months has exacted a toll against the progress which we should be making now toward the goal of desegregating education." It also stated: "We believe that concentration by the department on the problem of de jure segregation in the South has prevented it from coming to grips with the increasingly urgent problem of de facto segregation in our urban centers." The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has called on Secretary of Labor Willard Wirtz to crackdown on the Crown Zellerback Coroporation and the labor unions with which the company has contracts at its Bogalusa, La., plant because of discriminatory employment practices. Bogalusa was the scene of violent racial disturbances, in 1963 when civil rights forces sought to desegregate public facilities and to open up new job opportunities. The Crown Zellerbach plant, the largest employer in the city, was a major target of the civil rights groups. In a telegram to Secretary Wirtz, May 3, NAACP Executive Director Roy Wilkins urged "most vigorous action by the Department of Labor" against the company and the unions under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and U. S., Executive orders banning discrimination by companies with government contracts. A copy of the wire was sent to Stephen Shulman, chairman of the U. S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The full text of Mr. Wilkins' telegram follows: "NAACP urges most Vigorous action try department of labor against discriminatory practices by, Crown Zellerbach Corporation and Labor Unions in Bogalousa, Louisiana. "Continued existence of separate promotional lines in agreements between company and unions constitutes clear violation of Title-VII of civil rights act and federal executive orders prohibiting discrimination by government contractors. Racially segregated lines of progression together with systematic denial of equal seniority rights for negro workers must not be permitted to continue by U. S. Government in this major pulp and paper mill. "We can accept no conceivable labor union justification for continuation of segregated departments, segregated lines of of progression and denial of the seniority rights of negro employees. More than two years of investigation by federal agencies, hate confirmed charges that company and unions are responsible for discrimination in the hiring and placement of Negro Employees and that the company maintains segregated Plant facilities. Failure of federal governmuit to act will be interperted by major Southern Industrial Employers as Acquiescence by Government in there practices. NAACP urges that full power of Federal Government includ ing contract revocation and Litigation by' Attorney General under section 707A of Title VII be Invoked if company and unions refuse compliance with Federal Law and Executive Orders.
