It helped me work with failures as they presented themselves instead of throwing out the piece completely or starting over. I was able to use a wide variety of touches and marks in this painting, but I did not find it as satisfying as using one or two specific kinds of marks. The dark values, pours and paint smears helped me create a push a pull effect. The imagery was useful in the fact that it was a general and broad language of nature. This allowed me to have access to a wide variety of symbols and images to work with. I did feel as if the image became too rendered so in my next painting I tried to make my marks and gestures looser." This is a digital photograph of Hannah Lewellen's painting.
