Boyd, Mattie M.2016-03-222016-03-222016-02-04http://hdl.handle.net/10267/27117This image was photographed and uploaded to DLynx in the Visual Resources Center during spring 2016.Artists' statement: "The 19x24” acrylic painting titled Mommy & Me came about after looking at Louise Bourgeois’ figurative fabric sculptures that prompted me to make my own voodoo doll like fabric sculpture. From this piece, I painted a quasi still life of the doll being held in the arms of an abstracted figure. The doll and the figure in the background are painted in contrasting styles to create a tension between the two. The background figure is abstracted and painted with various patterning to mirror the patterning on the fabric on the doll. The two share just enough similarities to indicate that they come from similar origins but just enough difference to indicate a dissonance between the two. The foremost hand on the abstracted figure is cradling the doll but the hand is painted in a menacing way that calls into question the relationship between the two. The tension between the mothering gesture and the menacing one helps to evoke a dark emotion from the painting. This painting was my first step towards a more realistic approach to painting. It made me start thinking about moving away from the abstract figuration that my past work has contained and move toward realistic body painting. This piece struggled to relay content but was successful in relaying an emotion, which was both a success and failure." This is a digital photograph of Mattie Boyd's still life painting.
