| Abstract: | According to his granddaughter, Elizabeth Phelps Farnsworth, Mr. Down of Philadelphia was a very successful umbrella and parasol manufacturer and spent part of every year in Europe. He bought the most fashionable silks in Lyons and Paris and fine ivory, porcelain and carved wood from Switzerland. He had a great love of Shakespeare's words and great thoughts. This interest grew into a study of the actors and actresses of the Great Bard. During his many years of travels in Europe, he searched for and acquired an extensive collection of engraqvings relating toShakespeare. |
