Abstract
This course will survey a variety of periods and controversies in which religious ideas, beliefs and practices have contributed to the rise, perpetuation and critique of racism in the West. The course will focus mainly on two case studies: the religious roots of anti- Judaism and anti-Semitism in Europe between the first century and the Nazi era, and the religious dimensions of racial theory and racial conflict in America from the colonial era to the present day. These thorough case studies will prepare students to analyze attitudes regarding religion and race in contemporary religious communities
