Item Master's Thesis: An Asian Antiracism Curriculum for Students in Memphis Tennessee(Memphis, Tenn. : Rhodes College, 2022)On March 16, 2020, America watched eight women, six of whom were of Asian descent, killed in a mass shooting in what was revealed to be a targeted, racially motivated hate crime. The roots of anti-Asian racism are deep, dating back to the treatment of the first Asian American immigrants in the mid 19th century. This event is but one of many recent tragic incidents of anti-Asian racism in America’s history. Presently, there is little to no work being done in state history standards to teach students about these parts of American history. This project contains a unit for high school students to learn about Asian American history and explore what it means to be an anti-racist advocate and activist. The first week of the unit begins with an exploration of identity and stereotypes associated with aspects of students’ identity. The second week covers the history of Asian immigration to the United States and the relationships that have developed between Asian immigrants and communities of color. The final week empowers students to think about what to do in response to the history they’ve learned and how to get involved in activist work towards an anti-racist society. Much of the teaching in this unit is grounded in Kumashiro’s anti-oppressive education and Freire’s liberating education.Item Master's Thesis: Art Curriculum on Past and Present Memphis Artists(Memphis, Tenn. : Rhodes College, 2022)This thesis is an art curriculum for elementary students that centers Memphis past and present artists. The goals of this curriculum are to; 1) Grow student’s self-efficacy when it comes to art through providing opportunities for goal setting and role models, 2) Introduce students to past and present Memphis artist of color including their chosen medium, context in which they create, and examples of their work, 3) Guide students by teaching technical skills to create a work of art in response to the artist they learn about, and 4) Develop students’ communication through art. This curriculum was developed to actively and intentionally counter the white-washed art history curriculums available for students currently.Item Master's Thesis: Encouraging Youth Civic Activism(Memphis, Tenn. : Rhodes College, 2022)As Freire (1998) states in order to prepare the educated individuals as an active participant in society their education needs to be rooted in democratic ideals and practices. In this paper I aim to illustrate the need for a strong shift in the way our students are currently taught, specifically in their social studies curriculum. Within this project there is a unit plan encompassed with five separate lessons working with students on examining a problem, along with each position of the argument. Students are required to utilize their critical thinking skills, honing in on these skills will allow students to apply these in different facets of their life. There is a strong need for teachings involving civic activism in order to prepare students to be active members of society. Moreso now than ever there is a need to encourage students to be knowledgeable about the world around them. This project aims for educators to exam the ways in which we teach our students and reexamine the true purpose of education.Item Master's Thesis: Amplifying the ESL Curriculum Culturally Responsive Lesson Planning for Recent Arrivals(Memphis, Tenn. : Rhodes College, 2022)The basis of this integrated curriculum incorporates the language needs of recent immigrants to succeed in their mainstream classrooms. The framework of this design is not an independent construction of ESL principles and procedures common to most ESL classroom initiatives where basic skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening are the intention. The construction of this curriculum is centered on a more practical needs analysis of the language expectations during lectures, in-class assignments, and verbal interactions taking place throughout the day. Working in tandem with core classroom instructors and bilingual paraprofessionals, a clear action plan, stressing authentic communication in these classes to assist learners in participation and the retaining of relevant information to meet their academic needs is the objective. School administrators and staff are often in need of a better formula to teach learners who are new to English. A focus on anticipated key vocabulary and critical language structures would be an effective measure to build confidence and encourage a variety of class interactions. These language points would be rehearsed in small group work discussions, role-plays, memory games, bi-lingual Bingo activities, and other assignments involving task-based information, reasoning, and opinion-gap opportunities through culturally responsive teaching strategies.Item Master's Thesis: Culturally Inclusive Mathematics(Memphis, Tenn. : Rhodes College, 2022)For many decades the math classroom has been dominated by white men as women and people of color do not feel welcomed in a space where majority of participating individuals often enforce negative stereotypes through their comments and actions leaving the minority discouraged and unseen. Culturally Inclusive Mathematics will expose students to a diverse collection of racial, cultural, and gender mathematicians, which will boost one’s confidence, self-esteem, and sense of belonging in the math community. Allowing students to see a small portion of role models will increase the students’ conception of who has the potential to achieve in mathematics (Wiest, 2002). It is important for instructional materials to reflect a rich racially diversity of people who inhabit this world. Math educators should be introducing past, current, famous, and lesser-known mathematicians to their students, as the selected individuals can serve as empowering role models.
