Item Metadata only Katagami Stencil(Memphis, Tenn. : Rhodes College Special Collections, 2026)Katagami stencil made from multiple layers of thin, durable mulberry bark paper (washi) laminated together with fermented persimmon tannin (kakishibu). This treatment makes the paper waterproof, flexible, and strong enough to withstand repeated dyeing, as these stencils were used to print patterns on silk and cotton fabric in Japan during the Meiji Period (1850–1912). Thin lined hatching is symmetrical and dispersed in all negative space. There are geometric paterns making three larger shapes on the right. In the negative space there is also thick curved lines depicting branches with leaves (both hatched and solid with U-shaped cuts). There are ink marks in the bottom land hand side of the border around the cut stencil.Item Metadata only Katagami Stencil(Memphis, Tenn. : Rhodes College Special Collections, 2026)Katagami stencil made from multiple layers of thin, durable mulberry bark paper (washi) laminated together with fermented persimmon tannin (kakishibu). Thin lined hatching is symmetrical and dispersed in all negative space. There are six geometric shapes with cuts throughout and contrasting soft/rough edges. three of the shapes are compiled hatching and square texture, and the other three contain curved square cuts inside of elongated oval-like forms. In the negative space there is also thick lines depicting branches with leaves (both hatched and solid). Thin lines hatched in negative space, and long vertical lines in vine shapes. Large star shaped flowers with U-shaped cuts repeating in the shape. The flowers are different sizes and have different numbers of cuts to shade.Item Open Access Katagami Stencil(Memphis, Tenn. : Rhodes College Special Collections, 2026)Katagami stencil made from multiple layers of thin, durable mulberry bark paper (washi) laminated together with fermented persimmon tannin (kakishibu). Large bamboo leaves with U-shaped cuts connected to diagonal and large sticks containing (in the negative space) a pattern of lines connected to a center circle. In the foreground there are smaller versions of the same shaped bamboo sticks, vertical rather than diagonal, dark, and without leaves or pattern. In addition, there are small thin lined hatching in all negative space between the bamboo.Item Open Access Katagami Stencil(Memphis, Tenn. : Rhodes College Special Collections, 2026)Katagami stencil made from multiple layers of thin, durable mulberry bark paper (washi) laminated together with fermented persimmon tannin (kakishibu). Long thin lines vertical, and diagonal behind the shape of flowers and small repetitive circles. Inside the main floral shape in the center of the stencil are hatched lines from each corner to the center. The negative space has thin hatched lines. Smaller flowers are around the larger and centered one with dark negative space and U-shaped cuts from each corner to the center of the shape. From each of the smaller flowers are long lines as stems.
