Abstract
As Freire (1998) states in order to prepare the educated individuals as an active participant in society their education needs to be rooted in democratic ideals and practices. In this paper I aim to illustrate the need for a strong shift in the way our students are currently taught, specifically in their social studies curriculum. Within this project there is a unit plan encompassed with five separate lessons working with students on examining a problem, along with each position of the argument. Students are required to utilize their critical thinking skills, honing in on these skills will allow students to apply these in different facets of their life. There is a strong need for teachings involving civic activism in order to prepare students to be active members of society. Moreso now than ever there is a need to encourage students to be knowledgeable about the world around them. This project aims for educators to exam the ways in which we teach our students and reexamine the true purpose of education.
