Abstract
For many decades the math classroom has been dominated by white men as women and people of color do not feel welcomed in a space where majority of participating individuals often enforce negative stereotypes through their comments and actions leaving the minority discouraged and unseen. Culturally Inclusive Mathematics will expose students to a diverse collection of racial, cultural, and gender mathematicians, which will boost one’s confidence, self-esteem, and sense of belonging in the math community. Allowing students to see a small portion of role models will increase the students’ conception of who has the potential to achieve in mathematics (Wiest, 2002). It is important for instructional materials to reflect a rich racially diversity of people who inhabit this world. Math educators should be introducing past, current, famous, and lesser-known mathematicians to their students, as the selected individuals can serve as empowering role models.
